SAN JOSE, Calif. – October 27, 2021 — Robin.io and StorCentric today announced the general availability (GA) of hyperconverged cloud-native solutions that simplify and accelerate channel solution providers’ and end users’ journey to the private cloud. The joint offerings allow the Robin Cloud Native Platform™ (CNP) to be coupled with StorCentric’s Nexsan Unity™ enterprise-class unified storage or with StorCentric’s Nexsan E-Series high-density, high-performance, highly scalable storage to deliver powerful solutions for enterprises that require agility and as-a-service application delivery, where cost has been a major impediment.

“The path to an enterprise-grade private cloud is arduous and complex, requiring specialized infrastructure and platform knowledge to build a scalable solution,” said Surya Varanasi, CTO, StorCentric. “The ideal software-defined platform needs key features such as unified management, 1-click operations, data management services, customizable services, custom backup and DR, multitenancy, and self-service to enable a long- term scalable solution. The coupling of RobinCNP with either StorCentric Nexsan E-Series or Nexsan Unity meet these requirements with truly revolutionary solutions.”

The joint solutions are delivered as a hyper-converged appliance and offer a cloud-like experience for hosting virtual machines (VMs) and virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI). Compared to public cloud offerings, the solutions offer 2x improved performance and 50% faster application provisioning, with a 50% reduction in operating costs.

“Agility and faster time to value are the primary drivers for the adoption of cloud for IT modernization strategies,” said Mehran Hadipour, vice president, business development and tech alliances at Robin.io. “Building a platform that can support VMs and containerized workloads that provides a high degree of automation and highly competitive cost of ownership compared to public cloud will be a game changer for customers embarking on application modernization.”

Cloud Native HCI Solution from Robin and StorCentric
Rising datacenter complexity is overwhelming IT organizations. As a result, they have begun turning to hyper-converged infrastructure (HCI) for simplicity and ease-of-use. Using Robin CNP with StorCentric Nexsan E-Series or Nexsan Unity storage provides a software-defined infrastructure on which containerized and non-containerized applications can be delivered as-a-service and deployed in minutes instead of hours, offering a high degree of automation for lifecycle operations.

As Kubernetes scales inside the enterprise, users are looking to leverage the technology for running mission-critical workloads such as stateful applications like databases, big data and AI/ML applications. Unlike stateless applications, these applications have important storage and networking requirements. The Kubernetes community has focused on the need to support stateful workloads—the work done around Stateful Sets is a good indicator of this progress. But this effort is far from mature and there exists operational overhead in provisioning the clusters needed for persistent volumes. Many IT organizations are spending multiple cycles to get Kubernetes set up for stateful workloads, leading to friction and delays.

The problem grows larger when big data and other data-intensive workloads become part of the equation. Beyond the operational overhead, performance is also a critical criterion for these workloads. The enterprise decision makers are torn between selecting a DIY approach to running stateful workloads on Kubernetes and finding the right platform that is suitable for data-intensive workloads.

Small Cell Forum launches a blueprints program to make scalable private networks a reality for key verticals

Launch of industry initiative to deliver requirements-informed blueprints for Enterprise and Industry 4.0

London, UK – 28th October 2021 – Small Cell Forum (SCF), the telecoms organization making infrastructure solutions available to all, today announced the launch of a new program of work focused on developing blueprints for enterprise and industry, a significant step toward scalable and sustainable multi-technology private cellular networks.

SCF Logo

SCF Logo

More details about the program can be found in SCF255 How blueprints unlock the potential of private 5G networks, published today in support of the initiative.

Reference blueprints go beyond technical specifications to provide common guidelines, based on real world experience, for deployment in specific scenarios and industries, and for specific purposes. This greatly reduces the time and cost of deployment.

The initiative is being led by Ravi Sinha, from SCF Board company Reliance Jio. He said: “With the advent of the 5G-Era and the expanding mobile eco-system, there is increasing need to anticipate the technologies, specifications and blueprints needed to drive the industries and connected cities of the future.

“For vendors, deployers and operators, and their customers, the technology roadmap is becoming increasingly complex. We aim to develop practical, use-case focused blueprints that not only cut through that complexity, but also provide robust, scalable and sustainable solutions for key verticals. This is an ambitious program and SCF will work with partners and recruit from across the ecosystem to support the initiative.”

SCF continues to focus on private networks to bridge the gap between the capabilities of available and emerging technologies, and the availability of a range of services that can scale to suit differing business requirements. Small cells, especially 5G small cells, are at the heart of delivering such solutions, but a growing range of technologies also come into play including Wi-Fi 6, Edge Computing and Cloud based implementations. The huge range of potential use cases brings added complexities.

Recognizing this trend and the market need, SCF is launching a blueprints initiative within its newly formed Emerging Technology Group. The program will develop a suite of blueprints for specific use cases, deployment scenarios and service offerings with a range of cost and performance options that can be used by both vendors and deployers.

SCF Chair, Dr Prabhakar Chitrapu, commented, “Existing solutions for private, enterprise cellular networks have been tailored to single use-cases. The industry needs flexible, yet specific, end-to-end blueprints for scalable private networks that can be systematically replicated across multiple user scenarios.

“Our blueprints will leverage existing work from SCF and partner organizations, recruit new members and partner with external organizations to address the needs of vendors, deployers, especially in enterprise and industry. Working with specialist partners, we will also aim to address the topic of badging and certification, which should ensure cost-effective scalable solutions for the digital transformation of enterprise and Industry 4.0.”

MMA Germany Brings the Mobile Maturity Self-Assessment tool to Global Brands

Learn how your company performs on mobile with a self-assessment tool developed by experts from Google, Facebook, Adjust, and Ogury.

MUNICH, 22nd October — MMA Germany teamed up with mobile experts from Google, Facebook, Adjust, and Ogury to develop a tool that allows companies to assess their mobile readiness in less than 20 minutes. The Mobile Maturity Self Assessment examines areas such as organization, measurement, marketing, and product (e.g. UX). Companies gain valuable insights regarding where they are already demonstrating mobile proficiency, and where they may need to improve.

MMA Germany logo

MMA Germany logo

There are over 3.5 billion smartphones in use around the globe. More than 90% of the global internet population uses mobile devices, and they expect a great mobile UX. Fail to provide them with a good experience and 65% are ready to shift to the competition, according to Google [1]. Additionally, 57% of consumers do not recommend businesses with poor mobile websites [2]. It’s clear, mobile isn’t just another channel — it’s an essential strategy for businesses in the digital age.

“In 2021, we are an increasingly mobile-first society. It’s no longer enough to have a marginally mobile-friendly website, but objectively evaluating the maturity of a company’s mobile presence has been nearly impossible,” says Katja Griesser, Country Director, Mobile Marketing Association Germany. “The MMA Germany has set out to solve that problem with the help of some industry partners from Google, Facebook, Adjust, and Ogury.”

"Winning on Mobile goes beyond having a mobile version of your website. Knowing your blind spots and thinking holistically are key elements of the strategy. And since more people surf the internet on the go using their mobile devices, mobile first means customer first,” says Sebastian Grebasch, Mobile Growth Lead at Google.

Try the free Mobile Maturity Self Assessment tool to learn how your company performs and get personalised advice on how you can improve your mobile experience. Mobile traffic converts at less than half the rate of desktop traffic, according to stats from Monetate [3], so every business needs to take its mobile presence seriously.

The latest collaboration will unlock speeds of up to 900 Mbps for businesses in the region

Hawick, Scotland, 21 October 2021 - Emtelle, the leading global manufacturer of pre-connectorised blown fibre, cabling and ducted solutions, is pleased to announce a contract win with Cardiff based communications provider, Ogi. A three year, multi-million-pound contract will see Emtelle confirmed as a supplier of primary duct, subducts, microducts and fibre components for Ogi’s network and customer connections.

Training and awareness of Emtelle’s solutions are already underway with Ogi’s staff and appointed contractors

Training and awareness of Emtelle’s solutions are already underway with Ogi’s staff and appointed contractors

Ogi recently secured an investment from Infracapital to deliver a £200m phase 1 business plan to build a full-fibre broadband network across south Wales. This will transform the digital landscape for underserved communities in the region, with the network able to deliver speeds of up to 900 Mbps for businesses. Emtelle will supply first-class products for the fibre roll-out and provide support and training as part of the partnership to help Ogi ensure that every customer has access to reliable and high-quality fibre broadband.

Simon Wade, Sales Manager at Emtelle, said: “It has been a pleasure to work with the team at Ogi during the consultation, tendering and awarding processes, and we are looking forward to building on that relationship. As the demand for ultrafast connectivity continues to rise, so does the need for a reliable network infrastructure. Emtelle is proud to supply a full solution product range to support Ogi as it seeks to achieve its ambitious goal to connect rural and underserved communities over the next few years.”

The roll-out plans will bring full-fibre broadband to 150,000 homes and businesses from Haverfordwest to Chepstow as part of the initial phase, with an ambition to expand the full-fibre offering to 350,000 homes and businesses across south Wales. Towns and villages in Monmouthshire, the Vale of Glamorgan and Pembrokeshire, will be amongst the first to benefit. However, the aim is to connect as many underserved communities as possible over the coming years. Businesses in Haverfordwest could see their broadband speeds increase up to thirty-two times.

Ogi CEO Ben Allwright, said: “As Ogi grows, we must work with partners that understand our drive to meet our ambitious targets to enhance connectivity across the region to support business, residential customers, communities, and our public sector. Our goal is to create a world-class network, and we believe Emtelle can help us achieve this. Emtelle has shown how dedicated it is to providing reliable, future-proof fibre networks and are as committed to delivering an increasingly essential service to communities as we are at Ogi. We look forward to working with Emtelle to create a more connected Wales over the next few years.”

As well as using Emtelle’s passive solutions for its own networks, Ogi is also building many networks using Physical Infrastructure Access (PIA) solutions to enable communications service providers to share Openreach's existing access network infrastructure. Emtelle’s proposition included a range of PIA compliant solutions to meet this requirement.

Emtelle’s wide range of fibre optic solutions, constant innovation and manufacturing capacities have proven it is well placed to meet supply demands for ambitious projects. Its reputation for first-class customer service and support has been repeatedly demonstrated in the field. With more than 40 years of experience and its manufacturing facility in Hawick, UK, Emtelle has been able to supply solutions to key players across the UK and Europe.

Macro 4's information management suite extends personalization and business intelligence capabilities

Columbus version 9 keeps strong focus on digital customer communications

Crawley, UK, October 20, 2021Macro 4, a division of UNICOM® Global, has today released the new generation of its Columbus enterprise information management (EIM) suite. Columbus version 9 builds on the software’s digital transformation capabilities, introducing additional features to personalize multi-channel customer engagement and generate better business intelligence.

Darren Jack, Senior Technical Services Manager at Macro 4

Darren Jack, Senior Technical Services Manager at Macro 4

Dynamic personalized experiences
Columbus manages the interactions between diverse systems, people and channels to deliver personalized customer experiences. Columbus version 9 allows organizations to personalize interactions dynamically by responding to spontaneous customer and employee feedback, as Darren Jack, Senior Technical Services Manager at Macro 4, explained:

“To attract and retain customers, companies need the flexibility to treat them as individuals. Columbus provides that flexibility by allowing you to adapt business processes and customer communications ‘in the moment’, depending on how different people respond. That could mean something simple, such as a customer requesting SMS communications and then instantly getting a new, text-friendly version of physical documents such as bills and correspondence. Or it could be more complex, such as a call center agent adding one-off customer requirements into a Columbus form, which then kicks off a whole new personalized onboarding process.”

Actionable insights across the enterprise
Business intelligence (BI) embedded within the Columbus suite already helps organizations to gather and interpret operational data to improve forecasting, capacity planning, service level reporting, cost analysis and billing, and to identify potential efficiency savings in their information management environment. This BI capability has been extended to capture information from other applications, solutions and processes, and combine it with Columbus data for reporting and analytics. Examples include behavioral data from enterprise CRM, emailing and web systems, which, in combination with Columbus usage statistics, help businesses to better understand customer needs, predict future demand and build a more robust corporate IT infrastructure to match.

“The upsurge in digital customer interactions during the pandemic has shown just how important it is to keep track of exactly what’s happening in your IT environment, and respond quickly when things start to change. Our embedded business intelligence helps you to understand important aspects of customer behavior, such as how and when they are using digital channels, so you can create the right type of services, with the right capacity to meet future demand,” said Darren Jack.

Easier SAP output management administration
Columbus version 9 introduces a new gateway for handling business-critical communications from SAP applications. The new SAP Express Gateway operates as a ‘black box’ process to manage printing and digital delivery of SAP communications output with no need for administrator intervention. As it requires no monitoring, the gateway is well suited to managed service operations. The SAP Express Gateway is available alongside Macro 4’s existing managed SAP Gateway. Both gateway options enable organizations to manage output from SAP and non-SAP systems from a single point of control, increasing the resilience of their printing and digital delivery processes.

Darren Jack said: “I feel proud that Columbus is enabling businesses to become more agile and responsive to their customers in these challenging times – helping with everything from personalizing customer communications to delivering better services backed by business intelligence. The new generation of Columbus is all about helping our customers to accelerate digital transformation by quickly adding new digital capabilities on top of their existing systems and processes.”

Weaver Labs to support humanitarian agencies across the globe as part of European Space Agency's €747,000 investment into Track & Trust

  • Weaver Labs joins Track & Trust consortium to demonstrate and commercialise space-linked tracking across the supply chain

  • Investment represents part of €1.5 million project to establish network that allows for end-to-end tracking and delivery of goods, aid and shipments

London, UK: 18th October 2021: Weaver Labs, the UK startup driving growth through connectivity, will work in collaboration with OroraTech as part of a Track & Trust consortium led by Datarella to tackle complex supply chain challenges that humanitarian agencies across the world face.

The innovation, developed by the consortium, will ultimately allow agencies to track aid in locations that lack access to reliable communications infrastructure in a two-year project consisting of development and commercial trials.

Supply chain challenges

Supply chain challenges

Weaver Labs will be the open telecommunications partner in the Track & Trust project, which aims to deliver a scalable, cost-efficient communications platform & network combining satellite, IoT mesh and blockchain components, serving mostly supply chain use cases. The end solution will be a modular product that will provide a plug and play communication network that allows for end-to-end tracking of the supply chain. This will start from the initial supply of goods/aid and extend all the way to the last-mile shipments, even when limited or no telecommunication infrastructure is available.

After the initial success of a Kickstarter project, the consortium has expanded this target market to meet the needs of other sectors where goods require end-to-end tracking, servicing the AgriFood Supply Chain, Dynamic Supply Chain Insurance, Industry 4.0, and Smart Cities V2X sectors.

Maria Lema, Co-Founder at Weaver Labs commented: “We are thrilled to expand our work with the European Space Agency and play a vital role in the Track and Trust project with our product Cell-Stack. At a time when global supply chains are in crisis, this will bring innovation to where it is needed most, ensuring connectivity and for goods to be tracked in a trusted way.”

To enable traceability of shipments without being dependent on damaged or unreliable telecommunication infrastructure, the project leverages Weaver Labs’ Cell-Stack and its novel messaging system (lite-WireMQ), which is capable of extending many telecommunications systems. The already developed WireMQ asynchronous messaging system will be extended to support IoT and satellite to ensure the mesh network can seamlessly transmit messages across the two technologies, something already demonstrated in a proof of concept as part of the Kickstarter project.

Backed by ESA Business Applications and Space Solutions Program, Track & Trust integrates an efficient IoT protocol for transmitting geolocation, custodian transactions and GNSS metadata to a globally distributed ledger via satellite uplink. Cost reductions of an order of magnitude have been observed in similar projects and are projected here as well.

Yukitaka Nezu, Co-Founder and CFO at Datarella, added: “Track and Trust is a unique opportunity to combine Blockchain with SatCom and telecom technology to expand the range of supply chain monitoring capabilities. With Weaver Labs and OroraTech as our consortium partners and with the technical and financial support by ESA, we have a strong setup to make a success story out of Track and Trust.”

Accedian, Bain & Company, Colt, Rostelecom and Telia participate in TM Forum's Pilot of Inclusion and Diversity Score to Drive Top Talent to Telecoms

The Inclusion and Diversity Score (IDS) aims to create a single, universal index which can be used to measure the inclusive culture of the industry, providing a benchmark for change

London, UK, Digital Transformation World Series (DTWS) – 14th October 2021TM Forum, the industry association driving digital transformation through collaboration, has successfully completed an alpha trial of a new Inclusion and Diversity Score (IDS) - a single, universal index, believed to be the first in the world to measure both diversity and cultural inclusiveness, providing a benchmark for real change.

The successful trial of IDS is a significant step towards TM Forum’s vision to make the tech communications industry a world leader in diversity, equality, and inclusion (DE&I), transforming the industry’s attractiveness to cutting-edge talent. To achieve this, IDS is designed to deliver a simple, universal measurement and practical guidance to drive actionable change. Following a successful pilot with 5 companies, IDS will now move to a beta phase with a broader set of organizations, ahead of full launch anticipated in 2022.

“As an industry, we have made very little progress in driving real change when it comes to inclusion and diversity. We all know that we need executive support and data to drive decisions to drive change in our business. Although this is only the beginning of our journey, I truly believe that by having this metric in place, we can now set about actioning real change to ensure we have a healthy environment for the industry to attract and develop the talent that we require to drive the tremendous growth we are seeing and the innovation that we need in an environment for everyone to thrive,” said Keri Gilder, CEO, Colt & Chair of TM Forum Inclusion & Diversity Council.

Improving DE&I is now a boardroom imperative for many companies, with Boards recognizing the business benefits of attracting a diverse and inclusive workforce. Recent McKinsey data reveals that diverse organizations achieve 83% more engagement from employees, experience 20% more innovation, perform 35% better on financial return and generate 38% more revenue on average.

Simultaneously, there is a growing skills gap, with studies revealing 77% of CEOs see limited availability of skills as a major threat to company growth. Yet, while most (90%) executives recognize the importance of DE&I, they aren’t taking the steps to achieve real change. The need for change was echoed strongly by global telecoms CEOs during TM Forum’s Digital Transformation World Series digital event, where they noted the importance of collaboration on talent to drive their organizations forward.

Nik Willetts, CEO, TM Forum comments: “The telecoms industry must address DE&I to remain competitive, relevant and sustainable over the next decade. That journey starts with commitment from the top, beyond HR where the responsibility for improving diversity and inclusion often sits. Committing to an inclusive and diverse workforce isn’t just the right thing to do, it’s the smart thing to do. It’s critical that the telco industry considers DE&I a strategic issue as well as a moral imperative. As an industry, we need to improve our attractiveness to cutting-edge talent, together.”

The driving force behind IDS has been TM Forum’s Diversity and Inclusion Council, established in 2019 to help tech communications companies overcome the challenges of implementing diversity and inclusion initiatives. The founding member companies include thought leaders within the telecoms industry who are joining forces to ensure success in the digital economy, by attracting and retaining top talent, and making the telecom industry the most diverse industry in the world. They include Accedian, Amdocs, Bain & Company, Colt, Ciena, Nokia, Rostelecom and Salesforce.

The Inclusion and Diversity Score (IDS) has been developed by the Council with leadership and expert resources provided by Bain & Company. IDS comprises two main elements: multi-dimensional diversity of the leadership team of a company, and how inclusive a culture the company has throughout the entire company.

IDS will enable organizations to assess the maturity of their inclusion and diversity across intersectional characteristics, compare their maturity score with others in the industry, and set baselines to monitor growth and evaluate the effectiveness of their current Diversity and Inclusion programs and initiatives. The Council also intends to offer a set of crowd-sourced interventions to help organizations strengthen existing programs and commitments to better serve its employees and society. A select number of organizations have piloted the IDS based on the best practice of companies with the top Diversity and Inclusion scores with results due to be released early 2022.

“I am excited about this first version of the TM Forum Inclusion & Diversity Score and proud that Bain & Company is supporting the TM Forum in developing a robust, simple metric that sets us up for real, much-needed change in the industry. The score is simple on purpose and provides a pragmatic way to measure progress over time in your own company and benchmark against peers. To drive change, the identified pain points will tie directly to concrete, actionable interventions,” concludes Danielle Stekelenburg, Partner, Bain & Company.

TM Forum is now seeking additional forward-thinking CEOs that are passionate about the importance of Diversity, Equality and Inclusion to the future of the industry to pilot, promote the IDS and participate in the program.

Singapore, London, Digital Transformation World Series (DTWS) 13 October 2021: Bridge Alliance, the leading mobile alliance covering 34 markets and TM Forum, the industry association driving digital transformation through collaboration, have entered into a strategic partnership that will simplify the adoption of edge computing for global telecom companies, enabling them to accelerate digital transformation efforts and leverage new business opportunities in emerging technologies.

The partnership will advance Multi-Access Edge Computing (MEC) as a growth engine for the telecom industry. MEC supports ultra-low latency applications by processing data closer to the user instead of sending it to the cloud, enabling new business models and the growth of use cases such as cloud gaming, drones, robots, autonomous vehicles and augmented and virtual reality applications.

Through the partnership, Bridge Alliance and its member telecom operators will be able to leverage TM Forum’s Open APIs to deliver open, transparent and accessible MECs at scale. This will pave the way for interoperability and standardisation of MEC globally. The operators could advance their MEC development and boost capabilities in areas such as location-based services and optimise content storage and distribution closer to their customers for faster response times. They will be better positioned to develop mutually beneficial partnerships with ‘hyperscalers’[1] for new business opportunities.

Dr Ong Geok Chwee, CEO of Bridge Alliance says: “MEC is an area of growth which many telecom operators are focusing on as our industry moves towards edge computing. Given the current fragmented regional telecom market, there is a need to work towards integration and interoperability as a common goal. We are delighted to work with TM Forum towards standardisation and an industry-approved architecture in MEC to drive the growth and deployment of MEC use cases. By sharing knowledge and resources, we will help our ecosystem of operators and service providers evolve with the developing edge computing market and compete globally.”

Nik Willetts, CEO of TM Forum comments: “Alongside AI and 5G, MEC is one of a ‘perfect storm’ of digital-infrastructure technologies that will unlock the potential of Industry 4.0 and exciting new B2B2x services. For the telecoms industry to seize these opportunities for growth, we need open standards that make it easy to partner, federate, operate and assure MEC solutions end-to-end. By working with Bridge Alliance, we have a unique opportunity to rapidly co-create, test and prove effective standards fit for the real world.”

Bridge Alliance is driving Proof-of-Concept and live deployments of MEC services through its Federated Edge Hub that connects MEC platforms across its member operators, allowing them to easily onboard their respective edge platforms and deliver on-demand edge computing services regionally to support their customers. TM Forum is exploring the integration, interoperability, and service management challenges associated with MEC through its Open APIs and Catalyst rapid proof-of-concept programs.

prpl Foundation previews its prplWare CPE Software at BBWF in Amsterdam, October 13th and 14th, 2021

SANTA CLARA, Calif., October 13, 2021 – The prpl Foundation, an organization dedicated to carrier-grade CPE software in open-source, will give the first ever public preview of its prplWare Broadband CPE stack at Broadband World Forum (BBWF), October 13th-14th 2021.

The demo will show a real Home Gateway running prplWare with carrier-grade remote Management features (TR-069/TR-181), producing a complete topology map of its home network.

prplWare’s Life-Cycle Management (LCM) feature demonstrates how operators can transform their Home Gateways into a true home application delivery platform. From the cloud, operators can download apps and services to prplWare-based Home Gateways, then manage the entire life cycle through installation, execution, and updates.

“The prpl community is delivering the carrier-grade gateway stack that operators have asked us for,” said Len Dauphinee, President of prpl Foundation. “The prpl Foundation remains focused on delivering its new release of prplWare at the end of this year and we’re excited to show a first glimpse of what we are building to BBWF attendees.”

The prpl Foundation is all about open APIs and Open-Source to drive scalability. We invite new members to collaborate in eight working groups to drive the open-source CPE community. Memberships are available at Silver, Gold, and Platinum levels, offering inclusive options for the broader ecosystem.

Live demonstrations of prplWare will be available at booth C9 at the BBWF 2021 event in Amsterdam. To book a virtual demo, please visit the website here: https://app.swapcard.com/event/broadband-world-forum-2021-1.
