Staff, Patients & Visitors Get Automatic, Secure Access to Wi-Fi 6 and WBA OpenRoaming™ Across Multiple Hospital Campuses

24 Adventist Health hospital campuses will gain access to fast, seamless and secure Wi-Fi without needing to enter login credentials following successful trial

London – June 30th, 2021: Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) member, Cisco has completed the rollout of the WBA OpenRoaming service across four of Adventist Health’s hospital campuses in the United States. The success of the rollout, which enabled staff and visitors at the hospitals to connect seamlessly and securely to the Wi-Fi network without needing to enter login credentials, means OpenRoaming with Cisco’s DNA Spaces will now be implemented across all 24 Adventist Health campuses, saving doctors, nurses and IT support staff valuable time and delivers an enhanced secure experience for patients and visitors, which ensures their privacy.

Wi-Fi 6 and WBA OpenRoaming™ Across Multiple Hospital Campuses

Wi-Fi 6 and WBA OpenRoaming™ Across Multiple Hospital Campuses

Adventist Health, which serves more than 80 communities throughout the West Coast and Hawaii, as well as Australia considers Guest Wi-Fi a mission-critical service, due to limited cell coverage at many of its sites. The implementation of OpenRoaming means that wards, waiting areas, staffing areas and other operational areas will now be securely onboarded to a Wi-Fi 6 network, which users can access without needing to enter an email address or password.

Traveling nurses and doctors will be able to connect instantly to the network, saving time as they move from site to site. Each staff member will have an Adventist Health app that contains their unique ID. Users of the app will be automatically connected to the Wi-Fi 6 network via the OpenRoaming service on their arrival. Consulting and administrative staff will also be able to access records easily and securely, reducing friction and streamlining the overall running of the sites.

The OpenRoaming implementation also saw a huge reduction in the number of trouble tickets that would usually be raised in an effort to get on the network - something Adventist Health expects will benefit all 24 of its sites as the rollout continues.

WBA CEO, Tiago Rodrigues, commented: “OpenRoaming has always been about removing the friction usually associated with public and guest Wi-Fi, and it’s rewarding to see it serving a mission-critical purpose at Advent Health’s campuses. We’re excited for the next stage of the rollout, which will see OpenRoaming extended to all 24 sites.”

OpenRoaming is currently being rolled out to the 24 campuses using equipment from the Cisco Catalyst 9000 series access points and switches delivering the Wi-Fi 6 network throughout the buildings. Cisco DNA Spaces is the engine that runs OpenRoaming via AAA authentication and a connector to the OpenRoaming Federation.

Ed Vanderpool, Senior IT Manager at Adventist Health commented: “OpenRoaming has already made a significant difference to the experience of staff and visitors. Having access to Wi-Fi 6 without any kind of barriers means we spend far less time dealing with issues around connectivity and more time focusing on the important work that goes on in our sites. The potential for future applications, such as interactive mapping, really excites us.”

Prior to OpenRoaming the hospital had access to an ‘entertainment hub’, which had very strict access rules applied to it due to Adventist Health’s internal terms and conditions. OpenRoaming provides a direct path to the internet with accepted terms and conditions, and avoid issues surrounding bandwidth, access and connection quality which were becoming problematic at the sites.

The potential applications for a globally connected hospital campus with seamless Wi-Fi 6 access are practically unlimited, with functions such as personalized check-ins and interactive mapping - using Cisco DNA Spaces - to help visitors find their way around, already being explored.

For more information on the benefits of OpenRoaming in healthcare settings visit: www.openroaming.org or download our healthcare overview.

Speedcast Completes Oil & Gas Industry Performance Testing on Telesat's Phase 1 LEO Satellite for Petrobras

Brazilian petroleum company provides representative data to Speedcast teleport for testing over Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil — June 29, 2021 — Speedcast, a leading communications and IT services provider, has completed an oil and gas industry performance testing of Telesat’s Phase 1 LEO satellite using data provided by Brazilian state-owned petroleum company, Petrobras. Identified testing data was selected to represent the company’s typical data, voice and video applications. The testing program is part of Speedcast’s ongoing commitment to evaluate technology advances with the potential to expand the quality and scope of services for its global customers who require high-performance connectivity solutions for their critical, maximum-uptime operations.

Consisting of nine individual tests, the program measured overall performance of throughput, latency, packet loss and jitter across applications including videoconferencing, video streaming, web browsing, file transfer, voice and remote desktop. Results showed latencies of about 35 milliseconds, which is indicative of the final Telesat Lightspeed network design, whereas the other performance factors demonstrated the ability to move data reliably across the satellite. Testing over the robust Ka-band link demonstrated latency, data rates and application performance that are equivalent to a fiber-connected office environment. This enables the use of secure, cloud-based applications such as enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems, which require a lower latency than what’s possible with a Geostationary Earth Orbit (GEO) satellite.

Overall, these tests demonstrated that a LEO satellite can provide an experience equivalent to or better than an office environment, enabling the integration of LEO into a combined solution to meet customers’ needs and provide a reliable, low-latency solution.

“The testing program successfully proved that Telesat Lightspeed offers a technically capable solution with impressive latency that will enable new applications for specific customer operating environments,” said André Gustavo Sant’Anna, Brazil Country Manager at Speedcast.

“LEO will be another technology that Speedcast leverages to design complete managed solutions that deliver the high quality of service our customers require for their critical operations around the world,” said Will Mudge, Vice President of Engineering Operations at Speedcast. “We are pleased to have partnered with Telesat and Petrobras in this important evaluation program. We have a shared vision in striving for continual technological advancements to enhance remote operations today and in the future.”

Telesat launched its first LEO satellite in January 2018 to support live demonstrations across a variety of markets and applications. Live demonstrations allow Telesat customers and LEO hardware vendors to test low-latency, high-throughput performance, satellite tracking and Doppler compensation. Speedcast and Petrobras join a group of organizations that completed testing of Telesat Lightspeed, including various enterprise and government telecommunications companies.

“Telesat works collaboratively with its customers to deliver robust connectivity solutions that improve their operations and drive growth,” said Tom Eaton, Vice President of International Sales at Telesat. “Bringing together Speedcast and Petrobras to conduct critical testing efforts ensures we deliver the most effective, future-proofed solution. The program demonstrated what we anticipated – Telesat Lightspeed will expand the technological capabilities available for enhancing effectiveness of oilfield operations in all production lifecycles. We look forward to the future of a more efficient digital oilfield, backed by the support of our valued customer Speedcast.”

Speedcast continues to demonstrate new technology offerings and design custom solutions to meet customer needs, with latency, reliability and cost at focus.

WBA OpenRoaming™ Primed for Residential Rollout Following Successful Wi-Fi 6 Trial with Airties Over In-Home Wi-Fi

Successful trial seamlessly onboarded Wi-Fi client devices to residential Wi-Fi 6 access points with WBA OpenRoaming and moves to deployment phase

London, 24th June 2021 – The Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) today announced the world’s first completion of a successful proof-of-concept trial to automatically onboard Wi-Fi client devices to a residential Wi-Fi 6 network, paving the way for the rollout of WBA OpenRoaming across in-home Wi-Fi and wide-area wireless broadband networks.

The trial, which was carried out by leading smart Wi-Fi solutions provider and WBA member, Airties, was carried out in two phases. The first, which covered OpenRoaming settlement-free access, was carried out using Google Pixel 2 and Samsung Galaxy S21 devices. Once the functionality had been enabled on these devices, they were able to automatically connect to the residential guest network using the Google and Samsung account IDs of their owners, instead of having to enter credentials manually.

The second phase demonstrated seamless access to the same residential Wi-Fi network by using a third-party Single Digits ID after first downloading and installing a Wi-Fi profile on the aforementioned mobile phones. As part of the trial, Airties closely monitored and optimized the quality of experience (QoE) to ensure the best possible device performance for users.

The success of this trial means operators will now be able to ensure their subscribers are able to access the internet seamlessly and securely - without having to enter and re-enter login credentials - bridging the gap between cellular and Wi-Fi while maintaining full control of their privacy. A key differentiator for the OpenRoaming standard is that it is not impacted by MAC address rotation within user devices.

Metin Taskin, CTO of Airties, commented, “Our successful completion of this trial with WBA OpenRoaming is a major step forward for frictionless residential Wi-Fi access. For cellular service providers, it will facilitate more seamless and secure mobile offloading, aimed at reducing their network costs and enhancing Internet coverage for their subscribers. For consumers, it removes the hassle of entering login credentials as their devices roam securely between cellular and Wi-Fi networks. WBA continues to be a major driving force in the evolution of wireless broadband, and Airties is proud of our deep and ongoing collaboration to serve operators across the globe.”

Blaz Vavpetic, CTO of Single Digits, added: “Our collaboration with Airties demonstrates Single Digits’ role as an OpenRoaming Broker and is part of an ongoing effort to quantify Quality of Experience for our carrier off-load and venue partners, giving them confidence in their subscriber’s connected experience to Passpoint networks.”

Specifically, the trial took place in Paris, France and Istanbul, Turkey, and involved connecting Airties’ Air 4960 APs and Airties’ cloud proxy servers to the OpenRoaming network. Airties’ collaboration with WBA relied on Airties’ Edge software and Airties Cloud to measure and report on the connected devices, ensuring the QoE was not adversely impacted as the frictionless handover between cellular and OpenRoaming access points was achieved.

Tiago Rodrigues, CEO of WBA, commented: “WBA OpenRoaming is driving seamless Wi-Fi roaming and the convergence of Wi-Fi 6 and 5G. We’re beginning to see entire market segments to open themselves up to the possibilities that lie ahead due to WBA OpenRoaming. Thanks to Airties, these trials have proved another important piece of the importance of OpenRoaming for residential market and bring us one step closer to bridging the gap between Wi-Fi and cellular for a truly connected world.”

TEOCO and Swisscom future-proof drone strategy as they prepare for operational UAV traffic

Partnership builds on previous deployments of TEOCO’s AirborneRF solution to optimize Swisscom’s network to support UAV traffic

FAIRFAX, VA., USA – 23 June 2021 – TEOCO, the leading provider of analytics, assurance and optimization solutions to over 300 communication service providers (CSPs) and OEMs worldwide, together with partner STRAPAG, has today announced a partnership on TEOCO’s AirborneRF to enable the operational deployment of drones over Swisscom’s cellular network. The announcement builds on the initial TEOCO and Swisscom collaboration in 2020 which focused on initial analysis and optimization of the network for unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) traffic.

With Swisscom’s network ready to support commercial UAV traffic, the new engagement will see TEOCO’s AirborneRF solution extended to unlock monetization opportunities for the operator. AirborneRF will be used to bridge the gap between the cellular and aviation world, allowing different drone ecosystem players to come together to engage with the live Swisscom network data. This will enable new operational use cases, such as the use of drones in emergency scenarios, in industrial inspections, in search & rescue, or in logistics.

“This is an exciting moment for Swisscom, as we prepare our cellular network to support commercial drone operations,” said Manfred Bacher, Drone Solutions Lead, Swisscom. “We are now focused on ensuring that drone ecosystem partners have access to the required live data for safe future drone operations, and are able to leverage our network to unlock new use cases.”

Through this partnership, Swisscom will benefit from TEOCO’s leadership in aviation standardisation and regulation. Most recently, TEOCO played a leading role in contributing to the creation of the Network Coverage Service Interface, an outcome of the cooperation agreement between the GSMA and Global UTM Association (GUTMA), the Aerial Connectivity Joint Activity (ACJA) initiative, which aims to align the objectives of the global mobile and unmanned aircraft traffic management (UTM) industries. TEOCO’s AirborneRF is the first industry solutions recognised as fulfilling the global specification requirements defined by the ACJA Network Coverage Service Interface[1].

“We’re delighted to be continuing our partnership with Swisscom to see the capabilities of AirborneRF validated for drone operations,” said Thomas Neubauer, VP Innovations at TEOCO. “We’re now entering the next phase towards operational deployments and we’re looking forward to seeing how AirborneRF can integrate the cellular and aviation world to enable new drone use cases and help Swisscom engage with new partners, customers, and regulatory and standards bodies.”

Already deployed by several tier-one operators globally, AirborneRF assesses the flight path to ensure a UAV can maintain adequate and continuous cellular coverage for every flight. It assures minimum performance-based requirements and live information during flight operations to cope with the dynamic behaviour of the cellular infrastructure. In addition, AirborneRF provides ground risk information for specific operational risk assessments (SORA) and optionally monitors and logs communications signal performance across the entire flight path.

Holland Family Law Achieves Time Savings of Up To 80% with Zylpha Document Bundling Software

An investment in secure ‘Pay As You Go’ bundling software has driven efficiency and freed up more time for clients.

By choosing document bundling software from Zylpha (www.zylpha.com), Leicester based practice, Holland Family Law (www.hollandfamilylaw.co.uk), has seen document bundling production time drop by up to 80%, freeing up considerably more time to spend with clients.

In using the digital platform, the widely respected practice has also been able to significantly reduce stationery and storage costs whilst ensuring optimal data security. And, as the software is used on a PAY AS YOU GO basis, Holland Family Law has only paid for what it has used – ensuring maximum efficiency savings for least cost.

The considerable success of Holland Family Law is due in no small part to the practice’s highly personable and proactive approach, always aiming to maintain the client’s best interests and to provide the highest quality family legal help possible. Most cases achieve settlement by constructive negotiations, cutting costs for everyone involved with jargon free advice and clarity for clients. Maintaining efficient internal systems is at the heart of this success and Holland Family Law realised that digital document bundling was an essential investment for the future of the practice, bringing their systems and procedures in line with best-practice court bundling guidelines.

Zylpha, was chosen following a rigorous assessment of the market and shone through in a number of key areas. As Holland Family Law’s Founder Claire Holland says, “Zylpha won through on ease of installation and ease use. Add to that, it’s extremely fast at creating and maintaining even quite complex bundles. All in all, it’s a very impressive piece of software that we simply couldn’t do without now…. Bundling that used to take hours of our time to complete and maintain can now be done in just minutes. Zylpha estimates that practices can typically create bundles in 80% less time than manual methods and we've certainly seen evidence of that having put the software through its paces over the last 6 months. We are really pleased with the results and can see why Zylpha is head and shoulders above the competition.

“And, as a fully featured, Pay-As-You-Go solution, it is also a very cost-effective as we have only paid for what we have used, which is great news. The Zylpha Support Team have been brilliant too and it's also good to know that there's a comprehensive library of professional 'how-to' videos and articles that new users can refer to when they join the team.”

Claire Holland is also keen to point out how Zylpha has transformed the online side of the practice noting, “As Zylpha allows files of all types to be included easily in a digital format, we are able to send them protected by top level online security. This has given us tremendous peace of mind by ensuring that we meet current compliance and secure communications standards fully. The move online has also freed us from many of the costs associated with physical file storage, stationery, postage and confidential document disposal.”

David Chapman, Zylpha's Head of Sales & Marketing, welcomed Claire’s comments adding, “Holland Family Law are rightly recognised for the quality of legal advice they provide and the exceptionally high standards they set internally. Having invested in Zylpha’s digital solution, they have seen the fruits of enhanced document bundling resulting in significant time saving efficiencies; time which can be spent with clients. In addition, the peace of mind that our file encryption and the reduced need for physical file storage has brought to the practice, means they are seeing the benefits of the software right across the board.

Looking to the future, the last word should go to Claire Holland, “Having seen the transformational benefits of digital document management, we shall be working closely with Zylpha to identify other areas of our business where we can use technology to benefit our clients.”

  • IC Reverse Engineering & Code Dump by Olivier Thomas, CTO of Texplained

  • Reverse Engineering Firmware with Ghidra by Eric Evenchick, Technical Director at NCC Group

  • BootPwn: Breaking Secure Boot by Experience by Niek Timmers & Cristofaro Mune, Founders of Raelize

  • EMFI and Voltage Fault injection attacks with Raiden by Grzegorz Wypych, Security Researcher at IBM XForce & Adam Laurie, Partner at IBM XForce

  • Optimizing Crypto on Embedded Microcontrollers by Peter Schwabe, Research Group Leader at Radboud University & Matthias Kannwischer, PhD Student at Radboud University

Antriksh added, “If there is a vulnerability on the software side, it can be easily patched, but if there is a vulnerability on the hardware side, it can mean the hardware manufacturer may have to rebuild everything from scratch. The research projects presented at Hardwear.io USA will be used by people who build and secure new silicon products. Members of the audience will become aware of such vulnerabilities, and they will be more sensitive to preventing and fixing them in future products. Moreover, such research also helps companies identify counterfeit products available in the market. This is especially important, as the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the balance between supply and demand and counterfeit chips are spreading due to the global semiconductor shortage.”

Hardwear.io USA will be held virtually for the second time. Over 1500 hardware security experts from the industry and academia participated in first-ever virtual Hardwear.io USA conference in 2020. The event kicks off with 7 training sessions for 4 days from 5th July 2021, while the Conference will happen between the 9th–10th of July.

Attendees at Hardwear.io will have the opportunity to network and find solutions to address business needs. In addition to the training sessions and conference talks, Hardwear.io has come up with extracurricular activities highly beneficial as they provide its audience useful soft and hard skills through fun and entertaining activities:

  • Fix-Up, a unique networking event for the attendees to network and find their next hardware research collaboration or business partner.

  • Hospital Under Siege CTF (8th July), a scenario-driven Capture the Flag contest, where participants compete on both real and simulated medical devices. Challenges will draw from expert areas including forensics, RF hacking, network exploitation techniques, web security, protocol reverse engineering, hardware hacking, and others.

  • Capture the Signal CTF (9-10th July), a new challenge-based CTF contest that focuses exclusively on the reverse engineering of radio signals. Participants will have to examine a series of increasingly complex radio signals to extract key information leading them to the final exit signal.

  • Wall Puzzle Contest (9-10th July), a cryptographic challenge where puzzles are posted at random times during the conference. Participants must check all the sessions to solve all the challenges with knowledge of cryptography, physics, chemistry, electronics, computers, mathematics, history, and vexillogy.

The award for Innovation in Dynamic Spectrum Access Policies is presented to the National Telecommunications Agency of Brazil (ANATEL). The achievement reflects ANATEL’s outstanding leadership in adopting and implementing policies that make more spectrum available on a shared basis. The success comes after ANATEL’s decision to open the entire 6 GHz band (5925-7125 MHz) for unlicensed access by restricted radiation devices last February, as well as the on-going activities related to the use of white spaces for broadband connectivity and the advancements on their national spectrum management framework.

Recognised for their initiatives on connecting the unserved or underserved in Peru, the Ministry of Transport and Communication (MTC) was presented the Increasing Digital Inclusion award for dedicating spectrum to different broadband technologies in the country, creating the conditions for sustainable and affordable internet access to enable more people to be connected.

This year, the DSA Awards also presented the Wi-Fi Innovation award which recognizes a significant contribution towards developing dynamic spectrum access technologies in support of Wi-Fi use cases. This year, the Communications, and Information Technology Commission (CITC) of Saudi Arabia, is congratulated for its work on Wi-Fi which deployed more than 60,000 Wi-Fi access points since 2020 to help provide Wi-Fi services in public areas such as schools and hospitals. Additionally, the award is a recognition for being the first country in the Europe, Middle East and Africa region enabling license-exempt access to the entire 6 GHz band, which is really crucial for the development of Wi-Fi.

Suarez added, “We congratulate all the winners for their spectrum sharing efforts which are making significant contributions to the digital economies and livelihoods of people around the world.”

The DSA is committed to driving forward dynamic spectrum sharing progress and welcomes organisations to become a member for further collaboration and innovation.

WBA OpenRoaming expands new monetization opportunities with enhanced Quality of Service for Operators

WBA members drive the launch of OpenRoaming Release 2 with Orion Wifi, from Google’s Area 120, the first full deployment compliant with the standard.

London, 17th June 2021 – The Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) today announced the launch of WBA OpenRoaming™ Release 2, which enables network and service providers, including MNOs, Cable Operators and ISPs to offer an enhanced quality of experience (QoE) to their subscribers, including voice, high definition video streaming, gaming and more. OpenRoaming™ frees users from the need to constantly re-register or re-enter log-in credentials, allowing seamless and instant network access, enterprise-grade security and a carrier-grade Wi-Fi experience across multiple locations. The platform was developed as a global solution based on a common set of standards to bridge the gap between cellular and Wi-Fi, offering users frictionless connectivity as users roam between guest Wi-Fi networks and public Wi-Fi hotspots.

In this latest release, WBA has taken the proactive step of accelerating the definition, development and scope of its global Wi-Fi Federation, which aims to expand the Wi-Fi roaming ecosystem, promote global connectivity, solve secure auto-onboarding, and create new opportunities for operators and venues to commercialize their networks. The release also includes service enhancements for network service providers and operators, allowing them to guarantee their subscribers a defined, high-quality experience when using the OpenRoaming network.

Enhanced OpenRoaming for Network Operators
To bridge the gap between Wi-Fi and cellular coverage, MNOs, venues and other service providers are now able to deliver a defined, high-quality experience when their subscribers use OpenRoaming. Release 2 includes a federation-backed “silver” tier that guarantees an “HD video streaming experience” with a downlink rate of at least 5 megabits per second and end-to-end latency of less than 150 milliseconds. Silver-tier service is already available across 95% of the OpenRoaming ecosystem.

New defined commercial roaming templates
OpenRoaming™ Release 2 makes it easier for Wi-Fi network operators to secure new revenue streams through updates to commercial roaming templates, giving them the ability to scale roaming relationships quickly and efficiently. Orion Wifi, a platform from Area 120, Google’s in-house incubator, is the first to deploy OpenRoaming release 2. Orion Wifi lets public venues – stores, office buildings, stadiums and other locations – sell Wi-Fi capacity to cellular carriers, making it easier for venues with high-quality Wi-Fi to collaborate with cellular carriers. Raj Gajwani, director of Orion Wifi and a member of WBA’s board of directors, commented: “The future of telecom will require sophisticated heterogeneous networks. OpenRoaming Release 2, which powers Orion Wifi, is a huge step to unlock that future.”

Release 2 employs the WBA Wireless Roaming Intermediary Exchange (WRIX-N) standard for settled service and allows operators and other service providers to agree on the parameters for payment, sanctioning access based on the name of the operator, the service offered, the location and the agreed cost. Release 2 also provides the capability to move beyond bi-lateral roaming agreements, with the flexibility to set up multilateral agreements on their own financial terms supported by OpenRoaming Federation terms and conditions.

Tiago Rodrigues, CEO of WBA, who announced a year ago that OpenRoaming was “Open for business”, commented on the OpenRoaming Release 2, “Our goal has always been to provide users with a secure and frictionless public Wi-Fi experience as part of our broader mission to connect the world. To make this happen, we’re working to attract businesses from across the ecosystem, by ensuring that the standard delivers commercial benefits for vendors, operators and retailers. Release 2 is one more step on that journey, and we encourage players from every part of the Wi-Fi ecosystem to join this movement and become part of the bright future we envision for OpenRoaming – One Global Wi-Fi Network.”

Matt MacPherson, wireless CTO at Cisco and member of WBA’s board of directors added, “We’re excited to provide a home for Google’s Orion Wifi in the Cisco DNA Spaces App Center. This integration is lowering the barriers to adoption for OpenRoaming release 2, specifically for OpenRoaming-Settled access, which is making it easier to monetize networks with carrier-class Wi-Fi offload.”

OpenRoaming is supported by companies such as, AT&T, Cisco, Comcast, CommScope, Deutsche Telekom, Google, Samsung and more.
