HUBER+SUHNER and McLaren Applied launch first 5G edge computing rail antenna

Now enabling 5G applications to run on trains, the HUBER+SUHNER SENCITY® Rail ACTIVE Rooftop antenna is the first-of-its-kind rail antenna that contains an embedded radio and compute module to offer increased data throughput to support 5G services. It is an all-in-one active antenna with a single ethernet cable input for power and data transmission. Travellers will be able to benefit from improved Wi-Fi connectivity, while system integrators can also benefit from having more advanced hardware in order to deploy their applications.

To meet modern communication requirements, infrastructure must offer high rates of data throughput. 4x4 Multiple Input, Multiple Output (MIMO) systems have the potential to meet this data demand using 5G and later releases of 4G technologies. However, it involves many radio frequency (RF) cables which take up space, are costly and complex to install and result in performance losses over time.

HUBER+SUHNER SENCITY Active Rooftop

HUBER+SUHNER SENCITY Active Rooftop

The new SENCITY Rail ACTIVE Rooftop antenna from HUBER+SUHNER and McLaren Applied fixes this problem by embedding the radio and compute module into the antenna itself. The antenna is available from HUBER+SUHNER without application software (hardware only) and can be upgraded with edge computing software from McLaren Applied, such as Fleet Connect.

“It is the first product of its kind and is bringing rail communications systems into the 21st century,” said Daniel Montagnese, Head of Product Management of Antennas at HUBER+SUHNER. “With 5G even more cables will be required for connectivity, so this antenna is preparing the industry for years of savings on costs, environmental impact, and installation efforts. As mmWave connectivity makes its way to Europe, antennas will need to be fitted with radios in order to support this kind of connection.”

RF cables connecting passive antennas to radios are fragile and can be damaged from a small amount of bending or physical stress. If damage occurs, the whole connection path can be lost, leading to significant downtime. By modernising its system architecture and combining the radio and antenna into one housing, HUBER+SUHNER and McLaren Applied have eliminated this risk.

The weight saved by replacing multiple RF cables with one ethernet cable will significantly reduce fuel consumption. Traditional radios also utilise heave metals for cooling, which is no longer required.

“Without the need for multiple RF cables, the rollout of 5G is streamlined and train operators and rolling stock providers can benefit from up to 33 percent capex savings, as well as increased space inside the carriage. Tests have proven there is a significant increase in throughput and coverage due to improved signal quality. The antenna also enables deployment of edge computing applications in public transport fleets, such as McLaren Applied’s Fleet Connect. It brings connected trains one step closer to connected cars,” said Pablo Garcia, Head of Transport at McLaren Applied.

Operators now want to monitor real-time vehicle metrics, as well as trackside factors such as overhead, vegetation, and security – this trend will be accelerated with the uptake of commercial 5G in rail in the next couple of years. The active antenna provides the platform that can host an array of applications to achieve this, removing the need of extra computers in the train, offering further savings on space and weight.

Globally certified for railway standards EN 50155, EN 45545-2 and NFPA-130, operators are assured that HUBER+SUHNER connectivity infrastructure can be deployed in any location worldwide.

HUBER+SUHNER launches rail antenna that boosts 4G and 5G connectivity

Press Release

A new antenna from HUBER+SUHNER has been launched today to improve rail connectivity through the use of advanced dual polarisation antenna technology.

Designed to support potential 4G and 5G high data throughput over the train-to-ground connection, the SENCITY® Rail MIMO+ Rooftop antenna allows passengers to seamlessly carry out their digital activities onboard. This can be achieved by utilising MIMO technology, a function already supported by most modern train radios and by the public cellular network.

Powered by dual polarisation technology (patent pending), the SENCITY Rail MIMO+ Rooftop antenna can connect to the base station infrastructure while on the move with two highly decoupled signal streams, which greatly increases the probability of achieving MIMO conditions. This results in increased average data-throughput, while connected to the public cellular network, by getting the most out of the advanced MIMO algorithms present on radio chipsets. For both passenger connectivity services, as well as signal and control services on the trains, operators will now benefit from increased connectivity speeds throughout the whole journey. A smoother digital experience on-board can be achieved without the need for costly installation of dedicated trackside infrastructure.

“The railway market has been highly anticipating utilising MIMO technology to its full potential since the technology was first introduced with 3G,” said Daniel Montagnese, Head of Product Management Antennas at HUBER+SUHNER. “Since then, railway operators have been faced with the challenge of how to make high-throughput MIMO speeds a reality in train-to-ground communication systems which rely on the public mobile network.”

Montagnese added, “During the design process, we assessed the antennas with drive testing which showed stark improvements in the channel condition number, especially in rural areas. This greatly increases the MIMO probability and leads to much higher overall data-throughput rates. The train rooftop is a complex and challenging environment, therefore robustness is just as important as the performance. The MIMO+ antenna was also designed for high-voltage and high-current protection to ensure that the energy of the catenary line doesn’t pass through the RF cable on the antenna and into the train cabin, which would be disastrous for sensitive electronic equipment and passengers.”

The SENCITY Rail MIMO+ Rooftop antenna also meets high-quality fire protection and environmental standards. WBA and TIP Collaborate to Bring Open AFC for Wi-Fi in the New 6 GHz Unlicensed Band

Collaboration to Spur Global Adoption of 6 GHz Wi-Fi & Enable Better User Experience Indoors & Outdoors

London, UK, November 17th 2021: The Wireless Broadband Alliance (WBA) today announced an expansion of its relationship with the Telecom Infra Project (TIP) that will further TIP’s Open AFC Software Group and help spur global adoption of Wi-Fi in the new 6 GHz unlicensed band. The partnership will maximize the full benefits of 6 GHz Wi-Fi – today Wi-Fi 6E, and the near future, Wi-Fi 7 – and all types of use cases that can benefit from it, including indoor and outdoor venues that have adopted OpenRoaming.

The momentum around enabling use of the 6 GHz band is unmistakeable. Over 41 countries worldwide have already designated 6 GHz for unlicensed use. Many others are actively working to open up the band. Many of these countries see the value of enabling standard power operations that would require automated frequency coordination (AFC). The goal of Open AFC is to develop an open-source reference implementation of an AFC system. This framework will enable unlicensed devices in the 6 GHz band to operate outdoors as well as increase their indoor range while ensuring that existing services are protected from interference. Enabling the full benefits of 6 GHz Wi-Fi with an AFC system will deliver all the public Wi-Fi benefits of OpenRoaming including automatic friction free onboarding for users whilst managing privacy and security and enabling different identity options.

In May 2021, TIP adopted the WBA OpenRoaming™ standard, which enables users to securely roam from location to location without the need for logins, registrations or passwords. WBA will collaborate with TIP to define how Open AFC will work and how public and guest Wi-Fi based on OpenRoaming can benefit from the full capabilities of Wi-Fi 6E.

Open AFC also complements TIP OpenWiFi. This initiative reimagines the way Wi-Fi networks are built and deployed by leveraging open-source development and automated testing to allow Wi-Fi service providers to confidently deploy APs, cloud controllers and smart analytics from different vendors.

Tiago Rodrigues, CEO of the Wireless Broadband Alliance, said: “As we take steps towards optimizing the connectivity and economic benefits of the 6 GHz band, we also need to ensure fair and equitable use of the band. Open AFC will benefit the whole Wi-Fi Industry, including networks that have adopted OpenRoaming. It will enhance Wi-Fi to provide a consistently great, secure broadband user experience in stadiums, homes, enterprises, schools, hospitals and more.”

Chris Szymanski, TIP Open AFC Software Group Co-Chair, and Director of Product Marketing, Technology Strategy, Wireless Communications & Connectivity Division, Broadcom, commented: “AFC is critical to the future of 6 GHz Wi-Fi. With AFC, Wi-Fi devices can operate at higher powers, provide greater coverage, and operate outdoors. This fits well within the focus area of the WBA, an organization that is highly focused on improving operator provisioned Wi-Fi.”

Michael Tseytlin, TIP Open AFC Software Group Co-Chair, and Director, Spectrum and Standards, Meta, added: "With more than 30 companies already involved in the Project Group, the collaboration with WBA brings in new strength to the team. We look forward to working with the WBA in enabling AFC operations around the globe."

Matthew MacPherson, CTO of Wireless at Cisco commented: “As a board member of the WBA and a founding member of TIP Open AFC Software Group, Cisco is excited to see these two organizations collaborate in driving next generation Wi-Fi use cases,” said Matt MacPherson, Wireless CTO, Cisco. “WBA’s mission of holistically driving recommendations and specifications to simplify the adoption of new innovations is a great match with Open AFC’s dedication to delivering an open-source solution that expands standard power solutions and makes them available to a broad set of vendors and users. By working together, these two groups can jointly open up new opportunities for wireless innovation through the use of higher power within the 6 GHz spectrum, driving greater range and reliability."

About the Telecom Infra Project
The Telecom Infra Project (TIP) is a global community of companies and organizations that are driving infrastructure solutions to advance global connectivity. Half of the world’s population is still not connected to the internet, and for those who are, connectivity is often insufficient. This limits access to the multitude of consumer and commercial benefits provided by the internet, thereby impacting GDP growth globally. However, a lack of flexibility in the current solutions – exacerbated by a limited choice in technology providers – makes it challenging for operators to efficiently build and upgrade networks. Founded in 2016, TIP is a community of diverse members that includes hundreds of companies – from service providers and technology partners, to systems integrators and other connectivity stakeholders. We are working together to develop, test and deploy open, disaggregated, and standards-based solutions that deliver the high quality connectivity that the world needs – now and in the decades to come. Rajant’s 2nd Annual UNICEF Fundraiser to Offset Children’s Hunger Worldwide

Virtual Event with Star-Powered Musicians Tomorrow, November 18th, 9 AM to 4 PM EST

Malvern, PA – November 17, 2021: Rajant Corporation, the inventor of Kinetic Mesh® wireless networks, will host the second annual “World Music Benefit 2021” to bring awareness and donations for the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), a United Nations agency responsible for providing humanitarian and developmental aid to children in 190+ countries worldwide. The virtual fundraiser is tomorrow, November 18th, 2021, and will be streamed “live” via Rajant’s YouTube channel from 9 AM to 4 PM ET.

The livestream features the full seven-hour performance of musical star-powered artists, and a donation page is available to accept contributions. Artists include American singer-songwriter Morgan James, Italian singer Giada Valenti, 16-Piece Orchestra City Rhythm, American operatic tenor James Valenti, and other talented musicians. Rajant raised $30,550 in 2020 and has a goal of $40,000 this year.

“As UNICEF has shared with us, COVID-19 continues to affect everyone worldwide, and the impact is felt by those most vulnerable – the children,” says Rajant CEO and Co-founder Robert Schena. “Of every dollar donated tomorrow, 88 cents will go toward feeding starving children. With the same hope and intention in this second year, Rajant employees, channel, and customers are united in a way that is entertaining, informative, and fruitful in much needed monetary support of UNICEF.”

“UNICEF makes it easy to get involved,” states Wendi Jay, owner of Wendi Jay Design and member of the Greater Philadelphia committee for UNICEF, who is responsible for introducing UNICEF to Rajant. “You don’t need any special credentials except the love of children. Affection to care helps you figure out where you should donate time and money. Who doesn’t want to help feed and provide other essential services to children, especially during this time of continued pandemic when they need it most?”

Jennifer Paradis Behle, Chappell Culpeper Family Foundation CEO and Regional Board Member and Founder of the Greater Philadelphia Committee for UNICEF, shares, “Greater Philadelphia is an untapped resource, and we invite others to join our growing 15-member volunteer committee. A fun fact is that Philadelphia is where the Halloween orange box UNICEF collections began. It is a natural progression for companies in the area, like Rajant, to commit resources “For Every Child” and “End the Pandemic”. Driving awareness together will accelerate UNICEF’s ability to administer COVID vaccines at scale, which in turn helps address other child-related issues of malnutrition, education, and abuse. UNICEF’s unique agency model to partner with any government worldwide affords each of us to get involved with an efficiency of our time and money. Thanks to Rajant, its online donors, and all the musicians giving their talent to make a difference. It’s a beautiful way to enter this season of giving.”

Digital transformation can be powered with bend-insensitive fibre optic cables, according to Prysmian

Milan, Italy, 16 November 2021 - Today, optical networks need to be adaptable to meet ever-increasing data demands with advancements such as 5G, Internet of Things (IoT) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). In its latest Industry Insight, Prysmian Group emphasised that to support the evolution of these new technologies, it’s crucial that the capacity of optical networks are increased accordingly.

Bend-insensitive fibre optic cables play a crucial role in future-proofing networks for reliable and flexible connectivity. With an extreme fibre count and reduced diameter, the cables also make installations faster and more cost effective. Prysmian Group’s BendBrightXS fibres can provide the necessary standard of cable density, and can support the necessary fibre spectrum demanded by new PON technologies. The fibres minimise the losses that are linked to macro and microbends, optimise operational costs and increase the network lifespan due to a higher repair resilience.

“BendBrightXS fibres support the full use of transmission bands, covering the entire wavelength spectrum. This is increasingly important when future-proofing higher capacity networks, which will likely operate outside of present standard ranges,” said Prysmian Group Executive Vice President Telecom Business Philippe Vanhille. “This data transmission solution enables a safe, connected and powered future for all.”

With the demand for data continuing to increase, fibre networks are becoming more dynamic, crowded and limited for space. Therefore, fibre bends are increasingly likely to occur. Preventing this is a crucial component of high-performing optical networks as bends in fibres can result in power leakages. Prysmian Group’s cabling solutions can help network operators stay ahead of the competition and future-proof networks, saving time, money and space. BendBrightXS cable systems secure all frequency bands and will ensure maximum potential from optical networks.

“Network operators must prepare for future data demands now, ahead of the foreseen surge in required connectivity,” said Vanhille. “Scalability, profitability and space-saving solutions are essential to ensure that operators are ready to power the world of tomorrow, today.”

ST Engineering iDirect and Hellas Sat Successfully Validate Hybrid 5G Satellite Backhaul Use Cases

Demonstration sees full integration of satellite into the 5G network, paving the way for service across remote areas of Greece and Cyprus

Herndon, VA, November 16, 2021 – ST Engineering iDirect, a global leader in satellite communications, and Athens-based satellite operator Hellas Sat, have successfully validated hybrid 5G backhauling use cases over satellite. Showcasing a completely seamless transition between terrestrial and satellite-based networks, the demonstration not only confirms the critical role that satellite will play in the 5G ecosystem through its capability to broaden coverage to hard-to-reach areas, but further reinforces its cellular backhaul capabilities across Hellas Sat’s satellite coverage.

Hellas Sat vehicle

Hellas Sat vehicle

The demonstration was organized in partnership with Korean satellite operator KT-SAT, with Thales Alenia Space and Vodafone Greece which held the first 5G satellite backhauling demonstration in February 2021. It showcased how satellite can enable increased coverage in areas where traditional backhauling technologies are either unsuitable or not cost-effective.

ST Engineering iDirect’s Evolution® hub and modem equipment supported the transmission on the Hellas Sat 3 satellite and Vodafone Greece’s 5G spectrum in the 2100 MHz and 3600 MHz frequency zones. KT-SAT also provided its world’s-first hybrid router for satellite-terrestrial 5G transmission. 5G terminals were connected to the router to simultaneously transmit and receive various types of data, or utilized separate routes to and from a 5G network and a satellite. The terminals successfully maintained normal service operations with the Hellas Sat 3 satellite connectivity, even after the 5G network was intentionally disconnected.

“After two decades of operations, we are excited to be exploring this new dawn in connectivity,” said Christodoulos Protopapas, CEO of Hellas Sat. “It is so encouraging to see our partners engaging in such an important Proof of Concept to enable people to witness the benefits that satellite-based technology can offer. This ability to seamlessly transition assures connectivity in the most remote areas for communities, businesses and transport and also vital communications such as disaster recovery.”

“This demonstration is another step towards the commercialization of 5G backhaul over satellite services,” said Semir Hassanaly, Head of Cellular Backhaul and Trunking at ST Engineering iDirect. “It shines a light on the critical role that satellite is going to play in the future of connectivity. As 5G becomes more prevalent, it’s essential that remote communities, moving vehicles and other users of 5G connectivity, are connected ubiquitously and continuously. We are immensely proud to be involved in this demonstration and thank Hellas Sat for this opportunity to showcase the capabilities of hybrid satellite and terrestrial connectivity with these other pioneering companies.”

FAPI is a common standard agreed between chipset and component suppliers and mobile base station integrators. It is an API for hardware components implementing 3GPP physical layer functions, and for software stacks implementing MAC and higher layers.

FAPI has already been widely adopted in the vast majority of 3G and 4G SoC-based small cells. Significant updates to the specifications in this release include:

  • Support for two additional 3GPP Release 16 features: low-PAPR RS and 2-step RACH, for increased cell coverage and reduced access latency;

  • Changes to support multi-user MIMO and massive MIMO, based on sounding reference signals (SRS), for increased cell capacity;

  • High-performance operation (Control/User Plane separation, efficient padding, efficient DL Rate Matching, etc.), by reducing processing overhead;

  • Alignment with split Option 7-2x, one of the split options adopted by O-RAN fronthaul specifications, for easier integration;

  • Maintenance for continued support of Release 15.

The FAPI specification has evolved over more than 10 years to keep ahead of market requirements. This update demonstrates the ongoing commitment of the ecosystem to continually improve the standard, adding new features and maintaining existing ones.

“The current 5G PHY FAPI release represents a further maturation of the FAPI specifications, including a significant leap from an exclusive focus on the architectures generally associated with small cells, to now support architectures where the cloud boundary might lie between high PHY and low PHY with split option 7-2x,” said Andrei Radulescu, FAPI Rapporteur and Senior Staff Engineer, Qualcomm Technologies Inc. “The latest iterations of the specifications also reflect a focus on not just functionality but performance.”

“All RANs have MAC-PHY interfaces. With small cells, the MAC and the PHY are usually provided by different vendors, and FAPI has enabled an open ecosystem”, added Vicky Messer, Director of Product Management and FAPI Lead at Picocom. “With Open RAN, a standardised MAC-PHY interface is essential for all classes of cell, and the Small Cell Forum has risen to the challenge of enhancing the FAPI specifications to embrace new requirements.”

“We have a strong team of SCF members supporting the ongoing review and maintenance of these specifications going forward, and a clear roadmap for future developments,” concluded Radulescu.

Subsequent iterations planned for 2022 include further tracking of 3GPP Release 16 features like NR positioning and UE power savings and a continued focus on High/Low PHY split features essential for cloudification.

The complete SCF FAPI specifications suite comprises:

Pain-free gigabit capable network building a step closer thanks to launch of new equipment provider and consultancy

Aveiro, Portugal, 11 November 2021 – Telecommunications network builders throughout Europe can benefit from a one-stop-shop for consultancy, customised and tailored network equipment and a telecom and datacom marketplace, with the creation of Yelco Group.

Yelco Group’s aim is to ease the pain of expanding telecommunications networks by providing the equipment the customer needs, where they need it, when they need it, in the quantity they want, and at competitive prices.

“Yelco Group represents the coming together of two decades of success in the telco industry, bringing experience and knowledge of EMEA markets. Our Portugal-located laboratory for telecom solutions and team of highly knowledgeable telecoms and datacoms professionals creates a holistic service to consult on, design, and supply the products to meet Europe’s growing connectivity needs”, said André Manteigas, co-founder of Yelco Group.

Yelco Group is composed of Yelco, which offers customised telecoms equipment through Yelco Technologies and a consultancy service specialized in telecommunications through Yelco Consulting.

“If the equipment you need exists, our customers will find it at Yelco Technologies. If it doesn’t, we’ll design and produce it for them. Yelco Consulting helps our customers define their network architecture and assess the best components to build it”, said Manteigas.

The group also includes Twoosk, the B2B Telecom & Datacom Marketplace, and GW Fiber Optics, a manufacturer of highly customizable fiber optic connections, with the quality assurance of a Swiss connector manufacturer.

“We want to help build a future that is increasingly democratic, close, inclusive, sustainable, with more knowledge sharing and value-based telecommunications. The group aims to become a reference in the telecoms industry as a provider of A to Z solutions, helping grow networks more efficiently”, André Manteigas added.

Figures across Europe show that most EU27+UK countries have less than 50% subscriber rate of FTTH/B. Three copper-strong countries – the UK, Germany, and Italy – account for almost 60% of homes left to be passed. Yet funding for gigabit capable networks and investment in independent network providers – altnets – has never been higher.

The German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure (BMVI) has allocated €12 billion (US$14.5 billion) to its digital infrastructure fund. The UK’s Project Gigabit drive allocates £5bn to improving nationwide broadband connections. Figures this year from INCA-Point Topic showed that UK altnets are expected invest nearly £12bn in fiber by 2025.
