For over 17 years, Hampshire based Simpkins & Co Solicitors has been providing friendly, professional legal advice, serving clients across the counties of Hampshire, Dorset, the Home Counties and beyond. The practice enjoys an excellent reputation for its expertise in personal injury and clinical negligence compensation claims, and civil litigation. It prides itself on putting the clients at ease, offering first-rate client care and making the law clear.

As an expanding practice with the emphasis on client service, Simpkins & Co could see the benefits of electronic bundling for maintaining the exceptionally high admin standards that the practice follows. It had already experienced one bundling option but it was felt there could well be other packages that had an edge. Simpkins & Co chose Zylpha for several key reasons. As Jacque Aitken Office Manager at Simpkins & Co Solicitors notes: “Zylpha scores heavily as it is really easy to install and learn and the system’s tremendous drag and drop feature means that it is incredibly easy to use too. The software’s widely acclaimed integration with our LEAP case management software is seamless and works extremely well. My colleagues who regularly use Zylpha have also said that it’s much easier to use than the bundling app we already have with our case management system. In fact, in their opinion it’s very user friendly, didn’t take much training and saves so much time.”

“Our bundles now look highly professional and we have the comfort of knowing that when they are sent online, they are protected by the very latest security and encryption technology. Better still, as the solution is supplied on an affordable ‘Pay As You Go’ basis, we only pay for exactly what we use.”

“Overall, we are extremely satisfied with Zylpha and as a regular user, we have certainly put the software through its paces… to the extent that it is now a thoroughly tried, tested and trusted element of our admin operation. As such it has transformed how we manage legal documents and proved to be a very sound investment. We also know that if we do have any questions, the software is backed by a highly knowledgeable and very responsive customer service team, delivering exceptional client care. There’s also a complete library of free online guides to help new users get up to speed extremely quickly.”

David Chapman Zylpha’s Head of Marketing welcomed Jacque’s comments adding; “As a practice, Simpkins & Co is recognised by its clients for a combination of high-quality legal expertise and its dedication to delivering first-rate representation across Dorset, Hampshire and beyond. The practice’s evident success is, in great part, built on an extremely professional and well-run admin operation. We are delighted therefore that they have chosen Zylpha to deliver document bundling on a ‘Pay As You Go’ basis, and to hear of the significant efficiencies that this has already enabled.”

With Zylpha’s ‘Pay As You Go’ bundling performance seen as a trusted pillar of Simpkins & Co’s admin toolset, the practice has the confidence to look at other areas where innovation might help. As Jacque Aitken says, “Where the prospect of automation and innovations drive efficiency and client service, we would certainly be open to assessing new ideas. Zylpha is now a key technology supplier and I’m delighted with the friendly and positive relationship we have established. We look forward to working closely with them, over time and to explore the opportunities available.”

Small Cell Forum Releases Key Test Setups for 5G RAN Split 6 Products

Paper provides deployers and integrators proposed solutions for testing and optimizing disaggregated small cell radio and distributed units of the RAN

London, UK 28th July 2021 - Small Cell Forum (SCF) has released a paper outlining the key test configurations for 3GPP TS38.141 compliance testing of split 6 products using the SCF nFAPI 2.0 interface. Led by Forum members Keysight Technologies and Picocom, the paper aims to inform operators and integrators on how split 6 products can be tested, with specifications derived from 3GPP standards.

SCF logo

SCF logo

SCF’s comprehensive suite of 5G FAPI/nFAPI specifications stimulate innovation and competition across the small cell ecosystem by supporting multi-vendor interoperability within products and between different products of small cell networks, architected within the 3GPP defined disaggregated functional split framework.

Trends identified in SCF’s 2021 Market Forecast showed plans for Open RAN disaggregated networks – with considerable interest in split 6 for shorter range indoor enterprise, campus, and private networks. Operators and systems integrators will need to integrate disaggregated network components including the CUs, DUs and RUs from different vendors, and for integration/testing these need to be compliant with 3GPP test specification TS38.141. However, the units need to be able to be tested individually as well as part of an integrated system and this paper lays out how this can be done. SCF228 S-RU and S-DU Test Support:

  • Provides an overview of 5G split 6 S-RU and S-DU products and architectures

  • Examines the impact of split 6 on 5G base station compliance testing

  • Develops options and proposes different solutions for testing S-RU and S-DUs

  • Delivers an overview of TS38.141 test approach for split 6 products

“Open RAN disaggregated networks facilitate vendor diversification with radio units and distributed units supplied by different vendors. It is imperative that vendors can be confident their units are compliant when tested as a complete system, and a test solution particularly for S-RU needed developing.” said Vicky Messer, Director Product Management at Picocom.

“The test methodology recommended in this paper enables vendors to perform conformance testing without requiring any specialized test mode on their S-RU, thus removing a major pain point in the development and deployment process.” added Balaji Raghothaman, Chief Architect at Keysight Technologies.

“The SCF standardized nFAPI interface is an Open RAN interface that can be used across the ecosystem of S-RU vendors and S-DU vendors, but it is essential that it can also be used by test equipment vendors,” said Prabhakar Chitrapu, Chair of Small Cell Forum. “This document from SCF is a timely companion to the nFAPI specifications, and is expected to accelerate the development, testing and deployment of S-RU and S-DU based disaggregated Open RAN solutions.”

Altnet representative body sees record growth as full fibre roll out continues to accelerate

The Independent Networks Cooperative Association sees membership boom as altnets build momentum

London, UK, 28th July 2021: The Independent Networks Cooperative Association (INCA) have achieved significant growth, gaining 32 members in 2021 so far. As the independent sector is already playing a critical role in delivering the government’s Gigabit Britain targets, the growth in membership is a clear reflection of the strength of the altnet sector, and that these companies collectively represent an increasingly vital element of the digital infrastructure fabric of the country.

INCA logo

INCA logo

The new INCA members include the return of powerful industry stakeholder CityFibre, along with signing-ups by new entrant operators, major suppliers and local authorities. New operators welcomed by INCA include Freedom Fibre, Borderlink Broadband, Giganet, Spring Fibre, Save9, Toob and F&W Networks.

With the influx of new members seeking to join the community, INCA’s ability to influence policy through the government and Ofcom increases and the surge in new membership coincides with the findings of a recent report from Point Topic that identified 2.5 million homes and businesses can now connect to an independent fibre broadband network and described an estimated £12bn in funding secured by the independent sector in the period to 2025.

“As we welcome INCA’s new members, our unified presence in the industry reflects the overall strength of the independent sector. With the impressive funding achieved the altnets are well positioned to meet the Gigabit Britain challenge,” said Malcolm Corbett, CEO at INCA.

“INCA is dedicated to representing the interests of the thriving independent sector and the new members affirm the confidence that the industry holds in our experience and insight. Virgin and Openreach have been the dominant forces in UK broadband, but it’s clear that together the altnets also wield substantial and growing influence. The influx of new members we have seen and the amount of funding the sector is receiving are good indicators of our collective strength” Mr Corbett continued.

Independent operators are expected to reach over 6.6 million premises with fibre by the end of 2021 with an estimated 1.1 million live connections made. This acceleration will help ensure that rural areas won’t be left behind as a quality broadband connection has become an essential utility. As INCA expands its membership, the concerns and ambitions of the independent sector are presented with a unified voice to government and regulator alike to press home the importance of ensuring that the playing field remains both open and fair to all.

TM Forum Urges Rapid Industry Collaboration as Open Digital Architecture Reaches Next Milestone With First Cloud-Native Software Component Specifications

Opportunity to create industry-defining cloud native standards

London, United KingdomTM Forum, the industry association driving digital transformation through collaboration, is issuing a call for telecoms software suppliers, service providers and systems integrators to join the next critical phase of its Open Digital Architecture (ODA) initiative focused on delivering cloud native software component specifications to deliver plug-and-play IT and networks.

The call comes as the ODA initiative reaches an important milestone just eight months after the launch of the ODA Component Accelerator program. With the first ODA component specifications and prototype test kits for validating the interoperability of commercial software products now available, the next phase will scale-up to create the detailed specifications for 60+ ODA software components. In combination with the widely adopted Open APIs, these provide an urgently-needed blueprint to replace traditional telecoms IT and network systems with industry-agreed cloud-native software components that will transform business agility, operating costs and customer experience, defending today’s business and unlocking growth through new services.

Companies who join the next phase will shape these critical industry standards, meaning that they will have an easier path to conformance with the new industry-agreed specifications in future. Throughout the process, participants will also gain expertise in the industry's common approach to cloud-native transformation.

On the importance of being involved in the next phase of building the ODA standards, George Glass, CTO, TM Forum says, “As the industry looks to unlock the potential of cloud-native approaches to software and agile ways of working, the benefits of being part of Open Digital Architecture have never been more profound. If we move together as an industry, with a set of standards and processes that are universal, we will create the kind of business agility which unlocks new growth and increases value for the whole ecosystem”.

Glass continues: “On the other hand, if everyone goes it alone, we will end up with a mass of different technologies that cannot work together. This is why so many organisations from across the industry are already supporting Open Digital Architecture. Now is the perfect time to get involved.”

Glass adds: “There is an opportunity now for those in the industry to be part of this process before the standards are hardened. We want the whole ecosystem involved so that nobody is caught out, playing catch up in the future, having to rearchitect their solutions so that they are in line with the standards that are being developed today.”

Participating companies will collaborate with over 60 peers from across all sectors of the industry, including Accenture, BT, Oracle, Orange, Telenor, Telstra, Vodafone and others to develop the standards that connectivity and digital services architecture will run on for decades to come as it adapts and develops cloud native components.

Orange Group CIO, Koen Vermeulen said: “Replacing legacy via huge and massive transformation projects is too expensive, too long and too risky. ODA and its new component based architecture, pre-integrated on the ODA-CA platform, allows us to implement faster and more efficiently new systems and it is a key part of our global IT strategy: in Orange, there is a very large adoption of Open APIs in all our geographies, all projects, for internal consumption but also for the integration with our partners.”

Jason Rutherford, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Oracle Communications Applications said: “As a contributor to the Open Digital Architecture, Oracle is providing operators with the ability to drive faster innovation at lower cost. By designing products in alignment with these open standards, Oracle realises efficiencies in software design and delivery that benefit its business, customers, and industry.”

“Accenture recognizes the importance of collaboration, interoperability, and standardization in the industry and how it will impact growth for communications players,” said Adriano Poloni, managing director, Communications and Media, Accenture. “Adopting an open architecture will allow for new operating models and partner ecosystems. These are essential in today’s world when companies are transforming to intelligent enterprises and shifting to technology-driven telcos with platform business models. To enable this change, Accenture is pleased to support the ODA initiative.”

Vodafone’s Dr. Lester Thomas, Head of IT Architecture & Innovation, said: “Vodafone UK has utilised ODA to speed up product launches and boost digital sales by more than 50%, increasing sales conversions by 30% with its customer experience platform becoming a model for Vodafone worldwide”

TM Forum Open APIs, which are critical elements of ODA components, have already reached maturity and widespread adoption. This year alone, over 8,000 developers from more than 800 companies have downloaded TM Forum's Open APIs more than 64,000 times. To date, 22 software suppliers have certified their Open API implementations. By signing the Open API and Open Digital Architecture Manifesto, companies will be joining 60+ of the world’s leading CSPs and technology ecosystem participants in building and developing the future of the telco industry. Recent signatories include AsiaInfo, Capgemini, CGI, Cloudera, EPAM Systems, IBM, Oracle, parcelLab and TELUS.

Out There Media and MTN Ghana launch telco-driven mobile advertising with leading agencies and brands

Accra, 21st, July 2021 –: Out There Media (OTM), a global leader in mobile advertising, today announced its partnership with MTN Ghana to provide digital advertising services for its customers. MTN Ghana will adopt OTM’s award-winning mobile engagement technology platform, Mobucks™, and leverage its network of brands and brand agencies, driving advertiser interaction and engagement with its 25 million subscribers in Ghana, three times the reach of Facebook in Ghana.

OTM’s proprietary mobile technology Mobucks will enable MTN Ghana to bring its customers targeted and interactive messaging campaigns from their chosen brands and agency partners. MTN’s telco insights and wide reach combined with Mobucks’s precise targeting and personalization capabilities will enable “micro-targeting at scale” for its future brand clients. This will yield outstanding results, including 70x better performance in terms of engagement, response, conversion and ROI compared with industry benchmarks.

Several brand partners have signed up to be among the launch partners and innovation leaders on the Mobucks platform including Cadbury Richoco, Glitz Natural Care, Mandela Mile, Marie Stopes, Mycare Mobile, Odibets and PharmaAccess. One project came from Cadbury Richoco which ran a mobile messaging campaign to raise awareness for its national educational support program “My Ghana, My Pride”, by inviting school children to enter an essay competition to win scholarship funding. The campaign achieved an average Click Through Rate (CTR) of 5.5% beating current industry benchmarks for campaign engagement levels.

“Ghana has the highest mobile penetration rate in West Africa, and mobile technology plays an increasingly important role here,” says Dario Bianchi, Digital Transformation Lead at MTN Ghana. “As MTN works towards becoming a digital operator by 2023, it is extremely important that we partner with the best brands to bring our customers the right content, to enhance their digital experience and enable them to enjoy modern connected life. Out There Media is the perfect partner for this, combining its technology with our data and our reach to deliver impactful engaging, interactive and innovative mobile advertising campaigns for our subscribers. We’ve already seen the impressive outcomes of the technology and we’re excited to continue seeing similar results with campaigns in the future.”

This announcement builds on OTM’s recent work with MTN Ghana which saw the operator join a humanitarian initiative led by Out There Impact (OTI), OTM’s impact division committed to using the power of mobile technology for the greater good. Together with several global mobile operators, OTM launched an educational mobile campaign on behalf of the World Health Organization to help contain the ongoing spread of COVID-19. To date, the campaign has reached almost 300 million global citizens via OTM’s global network of mobile operators, including MTN Ghana’s subscribers, making it the largest mobile messaging campaign in the fight against COVID-19 thus far.

“Telco-driven deterministic data is the richest form of data one can get and we’ve seen firsthand how valuable it is in increasing the impact and reach of advertising campaigns and since we will soon be in a world without cookies, the value of this data is exponential,” says Donald Mokgale, CEO, OTM Africa. “Since this partnership means a mobile solution for a mobile-first continent, it completely enables the businesses, brands and agencies to target consumers at scale in ways that have not been possible before. We are all mobile subscribers before we are social media users and through this partnership, MTN Ghana is providing brands with an opportunity to go beyond traditional social media advertising channels, and to instead gain access to MTN Ghana’s captive audience.”

The contract win with MTN Group, first announced in March 2019, will see OTM’s Mobucks technology rolled out across the 21 countries MTN Group operates in throughout the African continent. The launch in Ghana follows the already successful roll out of Mobucks in other MTN Opcos such as MTN South Africa and MTN Nigeria.

Farmbot launches next generation satellite monitor

Farmbot Duplex Satellite Monitor to unlock endless connectivity options for primary producers

Farmbot, a leading provider of remote monitoring solutions for Australian agriculture, has launched its next generation satellite monitor which enables two-way communication between farm infrastructure and farmers via satellite connectivity.

Hot on the heels of the launch of the Farmbot Camera, the Farmbot Duplex Satellite Monitor is the central unit which will support the camera device and in the near future provide the ability for farmers to control pumps and gates.

Powered by Inmarsat’s IsatData Pro (IDP) service, the new generation monitor provides farmers with two-way messaging via satellite, elevating the Farmbot platform from a monitoring solution, to a management solution. Not only will farmers be able to monitor data collected by sensors, they will also be able to direct a course of action depending on the connected asset.

Andrew Coppin, Managing Director, Farmbot said the technology will have countless applications for farmers in Australia.

“It’s going to enable farmers to take an image, close a gate or turn on a pump, all without having to physically change locations, saving them time, money and enabling them to focus on other matters, he said.

“Additionally, because the technology leverages satellites, the functionality can be accessed from anywhere at any time, mitigating the cellular connectivity issue that has hampered some on-farm technology adoption.”

Although two-way communications via satellite has been possible before, this is the first time it will be made readily available at an affordable ongoing price for Australian farmers.

According to Mr Coppin, the Duplex Satellite Monitor will create boundless possibilities for on-farm connectivity for primary producers.

“This next generation unit will be the workhorse for the farm of the future,” Mr Coppin said.

“Not only will producers be able to communicate directly with our own products like the soon-to-be-released Farmbot Camera, but the vision is that Duplex Satellite Monitor forms the backbone of an entire open, connected farm ecosystem,” he said.

Steven Tompkins, Director of Sector Development at Inmarsat said: “Satellite connectivity is the way forward for Australian agriculture. We are pleased to be able to support the Farmbot Duplex Satellite Monitor technology, which is enabled by Inmarsat’s IsatData Pro (IDP) service. The adoption of Internet of Things (IoT) has been hamstrung in Australian agriculture by inconsistent and unreliable cellular connectivity. This partnership between Farmbot, Inmarsat and our Australian distributor, Pivotel, changes everything and opens up a new world of possibilities for Australian agriculture.”

Peter Bolger, CEO of Pivotel, one of Australia’s leading critical communications providers says this product represents a unique opportunity for Australian farmers.

“We are incredibly excited to see this product reach Australian primary producers. The Farmbot Duplex Satellite Monitor brings together best-in-breed global innovation and local Australian ingenuity. Affordable, always-on remote monitoring was once a pipe dream for Australian farmers. Now, it is a reality,” he said.

Though powered by the Inmarsat IDP service, the technology has been tailored for its application in Australian agriculture by a team of local engineers based in Farmbot’s R&D facility in Sydney.

The new unit will retain all the unique functional benefits of the previous generation including a robust housing built to withstand Australian weather extremes, ‘plug-and-play’ simplicity with set-up and install taking approximately 10 minutes, satellite and cellular functionality and a solar-powered battery with up to a week of power storage.

Customers wishing to purchase the Farmbot Duplex Satellite Monitor should visit: https://farmbot.com.au/connectivity/

NGMN Green Future Networks Project demands network equipment circularity and increased efforts in global sustainability standardization

In two White Papers, the Alliance emphasizes the necessity of Life Cycle Assessment methodology and a collaborate approach for ICT industry players.

Frankfurt, Germany, July 20, 2021: Today, the Next Generation Mobile Networks Alliance (NGMN) has released two new White Papers: “Green Future Networks: Sustainability Challenges and Initiatives in Mobile Networks” and “Green Future Networks: Network Equipment Eco-Design and End to End Service Footprint” – of which the first is exploring the data-driven assessments and research of the environmental footprint of digital goods and services, while the second focuses on eco-design and its implications.

Green Future Networks

Green Future Networks

In its White Papers, developed by 24 companies working jointly on the Alliance’s Green Future Networks project, NGMN requires to put the focus on assessing the environmental footprint of the Information and Communication Technologies’ (ICT) sector. This should be done at the different levels of the supply chain and with emphasis on the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) method as the basis of circularity. The overall goal is to reduce the use of materials with high environmental impact – i.e. critical raw materials – in order to achieve a significant reduction of the environmental impacts and align with a 1.5°C trajectory in line with the ITU recommendation L.1470. NGMN encourages operators, vendors, research institutions and other ecosystem players to participate in standardization efforts on the equipment environmental footprint reduction in order to share knowledge, develop and adopt common approaches. For further details see here: https://www.ngmn.org/publications/sustainability-challenges-and-initiatives-in-mobile-networks.html and here: https://www.ngmn.org/publications/network-equipment-eco-design-and-end-to-end-service-footprint.html.

Further, NGMN sees a strong need for the industry to increase the efforts in developing common methodologies to bring solutions to the complex question of assessing services’ environmental footprint. This might be realized for example through collaborative partnerships between actors with different expertise.

Anita Döhler, CEO at the NGMN Alliance, says: “In order to succeed in the implementation of real circular economy in the ICT sector, different sectors need to work together with global optimization goals as a common strategy. We at NGMN invite operators, vendors, research institutions and other interested ecosystem players to take part in our Green Future Networks project to help further enlarging its global impact – for the benefit of human.”

With its White Papers, the Green Future Networks project presents the method of life cycle assessment, which allows to more accurately assess the network equipment’s environmental footprint – among others providing a view on the materials’ footprint and the role of critical raw materials as part of the products’ sustainable design (eco-design). Furthermore, the benefits of network equipment re-manufacturing and refurbishment as well as innovation in packaging inspired by eco-design principles are exemplified. Also, the White Papers present a list of recommendations for operators and vendors on how to expand their activities regarding the eco-design of products – showing how measures in different areas help reducing the environmental footprint.

Jeroen Cox, Strategic Lead Energy & Environment at KPN, says: “Critical raw materials are significant in the design of network equipment. Circular economy strategies like reducing, refurbishing or recycling should be considered to lower the supply risk of the materials in collaboration with partners in the value chain.”

Arash Ashouriha, SVP at Deutsche Telekom and Chairman of the NGMN Board, stresses: “At Deutsche Telekom, we lay a great deal of emphasis on reducing waste and recycling of resources. Our approach of ‘sharing instead of owning’ contributes to resource conservation which is not only good for the environment but also brings along cost savings, and reduced waste of material. We are very excited to be a part of NGMN’s eco-design initiative and we further encourage the industry to keep circular economy as a central focus point in all the activities.”

The NGNM Green Future Networks project was launched in October 2020. It works actively with standardization organizations related to sustainability efforts relevant for telecom networks and issues new recommendations focusing on metrics, eco-design and energy efficiency – to provide guidance to the telecommunication industry in order to significantly reduce the environmental impacts and align with a 1.5°C trajectory in line with the ITU recommendation L.1470.

Further Information
The NGNM Alliance recommendations include:

  • Companies are recommended to develop and increase awareness of the challenges related to Green House Gas emissions and resources depletion (scarce or critical materials) of network equipment. To this end, the technical skills on eco-design and life cycle assessment (LCA) need to be expanded, specially from vendor side.

  • NGMN strongly recommends all mobile network operators and equipment manufacturers to use circular economy principles (for instance, according to ITU-T L.1023) and environmental footprint assessment (using LCA method, for instance with ITU-T L.1410) and to integrate them in the procurement process.

  • Investigating new business models related to circular economy paradigm is advised. For instance, switching to Product-Service-System (PSS) could reduce the environmental footprint, leading to different hardware design strategies, considerations about product life expectancy, modularity and upgradeability. There is evidence that applying this kind of business model can lead to significant improvements and we encourage companies to look for this kind of solutions.

  • In order to continue advancing in the networks environmental footprint reduction, NGMN calls the industry to increase the efforts to collaborate in order to develop common methodologies to bring solutions to the complex question of assessing services environmental footprint. Collaborative partnerships between actors with different expertise will also help to overcome a lack of skilled experts to this end.

  • NGMN recommends that vendors, operators, research institutions and other ecosystem players participate in standardization efforts on the equipment environmental footprint reduction to share knowledge and to develop and adopt common approaches.

  • Also, NGMN strongly encourages vendors to expand their activities regarding eco-design of products, taking the environmental footprint into account as well as critical materials usage, refurbishing and re-manufacturing.

Iskratel to introduce powerful fibre optic services at Gigabit Summit 2021

Innovative new products such as the ComboPON OLT are designed for modern fibre optic networks, and will be showcased at this year’s conference

Munich, July 14, 2021 - Iskratel, a leading European ICT provider, will be presenting its innovative, brand-new Optical Network Terminal and Optical Line Terminal (ONT / OLT) products and services designed for modern fibre optic networks at the Gigabit Summit in Hessen, Germany this week.

The annual conference is aimed at highlighting the expansion and further development of digital infrastructures. Iskratel’s Patrick A. Zuncke, Head of the Munich branch, will be expanding on Iskratel’s continued focus in Germany and will showcase the brand-new SI3000 Lumia C16 at the Rhein Main Congress Center in Wiesbaden.

The network has a high-performance ComboPON OLT in its luggage, that meets current and future requirements for passive optical networks. Compactly designed, the SI3000 Lumia C16 is network processor-based, meaning that the functions and performance parameters can be conveniently set in microcode, allowing for a high level of interoperability. Network operators can therefore provide XGS-PON and GPON end-users with high-speed Internet services with just one device. Furthermore, new debugging tools such as network tracing and the integrated, OMCI-compliant analyser will make network monitoring easier.

Zuncke also attributes the great demand to the currently prevailing supply bottlenecks for chipsets, semiconductors and electronic components. "The booming economy in the USA and China as well as the effects of the Coronavirus pandemic on global supply chains are causing bottlenecks in Europe," explains Zuncke. "With the ComboPON OLT SI3000 Lumia C16, network operators are optimally positioned so that no new hardware for fibre optic networks have to be purchased when demand increases."

In addition to exclusive new details about the SI3000 Lumia C16, participants of the Gigabit Summit will also gain insight into the current Iskratel products and the services for setting up modern fibre optic networks. Both the ComboPON OLT SI3000 Lumia C16 and the innovative CPE of the Innbox series are expected to be in high demand in Germany, an estimate supported by the first testing activities that Iskratel is currently carrying out in collaboration with selected German network operators.

Zuncke added: "This is a promising start shortly after we opened our branch in Munich. I am confident that we will complete the tests successfully and thus significantly increase our market share in Germany."

Iskratel will be located at booth no. 45 at the event that begins on July 14th. Find out more about Gigabit Summit 2021 and see its full list of exhibitors here: https://www.breitband-in-hessen.de/gigabitgipfel2021/

Small Cell Forum neutral hosts propose Hosted Open RAN global framework

Framework combines the qualities of DAS, CBRS/OnGo and JOTS NHIB with Open RAN disaggregation and virtualisation to provide flexible and modular approach for neutral hosting and private networks

London, UK – 13th July 2021 – Small Cell Forum (SCF), the telecoms organization making infrastructure solutions available to all, today unveiled a proposed global framework for hosted Open RAN networks combining the qualities of established and emerging neutral host architectures ranging from site share and Distributed Antenna Systems (DAS) to small cells with Citizen Broadband Radio Service (CBRS) and Joint Operator Technical Specifications for Neutral Host In-Building (JOTS NHIB). The proposal is available to download from https://www.smallcellforum.org/neutral-host-requirements/.

SCF Logo

SCF Logo

TowerCos and neutral hosts have long worked with MNOs in supporting network deployments, particularly in scenarios where sharing is beneficial or essential. The deeper the sharing, the more savings are possible, the faster the deployment, and the more standardised the service offering to the MNOs. Neutral hosts recognize all mobile operators have unique strategies for their network build outs, and have different needs for incorporating hosted elements. At the same time, the mix of different sharing models presents complexity for the NH provider, so harmonised approaches are desirable.

Several regions are homing in on hosting frameworks which fit with the specifics of their markets- CBRS/OnGo in the US and JOTS NHIB in the UK. SCF neutral hosts see value in creating a global framework around these to recommend best practice and have proposed this as ‘Hosted Open RAN’. This will provide a flexible and modular approach to hosting to meet different MNO needs, whilst reducing complexity for neutral hosts to lower costs and enable scale.

“As Open RAN is revolutionising the way in which the mobile technology ecosystem can cooperate to build out 5G networks, so neutral host is having the same impact on the way in which networks are deployed and managed,” said Julius Robson, Chief Strategy Officer, Small Cell Forum. “Our Hosted Open RAN framework, developed by leading global neutral hosts and TowerCos, harmonises a global approach to neutral hosting and private networks supporting flexibility for MNOs and scalability for neutral host deployers.”

Energy efficient fibre solutions are leading the way towards a more sustainable Europe, says Prysmian Group

Latest Industry Insight highlights the need for operators to prioritise green solutions for the post Covid-19 era, with optical fibre significantly outperforming its rivals in terms of consumption

Milan, Italy, 13 July 2021 – As the amount of data traffic rises due to an increasingly connected world, global operators must play their part in powering a greener, more digital and resilient society by leveraging high-capacity optical fibre systems. According to the new Industry Insight from Prysmian Group, by deploying optical fibre networks that use eco-friendly materials, operators will reduce energy consumption and cut out unnecessary emissions across the supply chain. As countries across the continent prepare for the post Covid-19 era, quality passive optical networks will be essential to enable their digital transformation.

Broadband traffic has risen significantly over the past year as millions of people began to work remotely, however optical fibre connections account for just 26 percent of total broadband connections on average in the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Increasing the share of fibre connections will be crucial to ensure countries can benefit from emerging technologies and deliver connectivity at optimum speed and low latency.

Optical fibre helps to reduce energy consumption, with gains made during production and built upon further once the optical fibre has been deployed across networks and used for last mile connectivity. This is due to its use of spectrum, which can be lit on demand, rather than constantly, at each end point. Fibre is also more energy efficient than its rivals, ADSL, PSTN and mobile, through its reliability, longer lifespan and future-proofed capacities, even more so when choosing a high-quality bend-insensitive fibre, such as Prysmian Group’s BendBright™XS G.657.A2 fibre.

“Fibre optic providers have an important role to play in the journey towards a greener future, including Prysmian Group. Fibre offers enhanced stability and reliability and has a longer expected network lifetime. Not only does this subsequently save money, but it reduces the environmental impact as less material is being used,” said Philippe Vanhille, Executive Vice President Telecom Business at Prysmian Group. “We believe that more energy efficient fibre solutions must be designed, while still providing the digital infrastructure that is required in a connected world. We are making vast improvements in energy efficiency, through the use of spectrum and by reducing consumption across mobile networks, but this is not a solo effort. The entire ecosystem must come together to make sustainable networks a reality.”

The use of fibre also enhances the efficiency of mobile networks, especially when used to connect an antenna, making it vital for telecoms networks and the fixed, enterprise and mobile customers they serve. This is particularly important due to the increasing wavelength requirements of passive optical networks, and the rising impact of 5G as it is rolled out across the globe.

The new Industry Insight from Prysmian Group highlights the future-proofing capabilities offered by fibre through its compatibility with foreseen iterations of fixed and mobile networks, including Fibre To The Curb (FTTC), Fibre To The Home (FTTH) and 5G. The company has developed sustainable solutions that use recycled materials and have a smaller design, resulting in reduced supply chain, transport, storage and installation costs for customers.

AdaptiveMobile Security announces the first unified 5G network security solution to protect mobile networks

5G network security solution allows carriers to understand, predict and defend critical 5G infrastructure against internal and external threats.

Dublin, Ireland July 7, 2021 – AdaptiveMobile Security, the world leader in mobile network security, announced today a new trio of interconnected 5G security platforms that allows carriers to protect against internal and external security threats to their 5G infrastructure. This is the first unified 5G network security solution, bringing together a combination of cybersecurity capabilities that operate in unison to secure 5G networks, slices, vertical APIs, and subscribers.

Increasingly sophisticated attacks are likely to target 5G Networks. 5G network security is an order of magnitude more complex than any previous mobile technologies. The attack surface is bigger, telecom and internet protocols are converging, and the attacker tools are more widely available. 5G networks must therefore be secured at the interconnects with external networks and systems deployed to prevent nation state adversaries and criminal organizations using other perceived ‘trusted’ networks to execute missions against an operator’s 5G infrastructure. The networks need to be protected internally from rogue slices compromised by threat actors and new application APIs exposed by 5G networks must be secured to avoid creating new attack vectors.

AdaptiveMobile Security’s new 5G network security portfolio encompasses Enhanced Security Edge Protection Proxy (eSEPP) to secure both interconnected network and other network infrastructure in a mixed 4G/5G network deployment; Enhanced Service Communication Proxy (eSCP) to enforce security zones inside the core network; and the AdaptiveMobile Security Vertical API Protector, which secures the Northbound interface by verifying signalling and control communications in order to protect 5G network APIs from threat actors.

“As it currently stands, we do not appear to have learned the security lessons from 3G and 4G. Security in 5G networks is not built-in as promised and major vulnerabilities have been exposed even before the technology has been deployed,” said Brian Collins, CEO, AdaptiveMobile Security. “5G network core technologies will be fundamentally insecure, and operators face having to protect their networks from both existing and emerging threats. Attackers already have access to the tools and techniques that are known to be effective, exploiting the IT protocols on which 5G architectures are built. Trust is not a security or a business strategy – governments, regulators, mobile operators, and network equipment vendors must all step up and secure the critical infrastructure of 5G networks. Nation-states and cyber-criminal adversaries will take advantage of any security gaps in mobile networks with catastrophic consequences for nations, networks, enterprises and subscribers.”

By identifying and correlating sources of external and internal attacks on 5G networks and subscribers, AdaptiveMobile Security enables governments, regulators, and mobile operators to understand the nature of emerging threats, pinpoint global threat actors attacking their network and prevent internal attacks on network slices. The 5G network security solution proactively manages defences against known sources of signalling attacks so mobile operators can understand, predict and defend against attacker’s methods, objectives, infrastructure, and evolution.

“5G is driving the mobile industry into adopting the technology and techniques of the IT world to increase efficiency and improve functionality,” said Dr. Silke Holtmanns, Head of 5G Security Research, AdaptiveMobile Security. “However, while laudable, there needs to be a wider mind-set change. When it comes to securing 5G, the telecoms industry needs to fully embrace a holistic and collaborative approach to secure networks across standards bodies, working groups, operators, and vendors. This new unified approach to 5G network security will be critical in protecting operators’ networks, enterprise customer and subscribers from new and emerging cybersecurity threats.”

AdaptiveMobile Security’s new comprehensive 5G network security solution is founded on its unrivalled expertise in mobile network security and team of dedicated 5G security experts. AdaptiveMobile Security is at the forefront of identifying and mitigating emerging 5G security threats. In April this year, its 5G research team revealed fundamental flaws in the standards for 5G slicing which, if unaddressed, risk exposing operators and their enterprise customers to malicious threats.

On 14 July 2021, AdaptiveMobile Security’s Head of Pre-Sales Engineering, John Kennedy, will share more information on the convergence of enterprise and telco security with 5G in a TrustTalks by AdaptiveMobile Security conversation with Patrick Donegan, Founder and Principal Analyst at HardenStance. The discussion will focus on what can the telecoms sector learn from cyber security best practices such as the ones conducted by leading banks, transport, logistics and other businesses and explore how telecom security needs to evolve beyond just implementing new 3GPP 5G specs.
