Bend-insensitive fibres significantly reduce bend losses and extend the expected network lifetime, according to Prysmian

Prysmian Group highlights the impact of leveraging bend-insensitive fibres across the entire wavelength spectrum used by current and future PON technology

Milan, Italy, 27 September 2021 – In the new era of hyper connectivity, it is essential that the industry looks to increase the capacity of the world’s optical networks and operators must choose to leverage a bend-insensitive fibre cabling system that can keep up with new technologies, was the message expressed by Prysmian Group in its latest Industry Insight.

Bend-insensitive fibres, especially the best performing G.657.A2, can enable the development of extreme fibre count and reduced diameter cabling solutions to provide the highest bandwidth capacity in duct installations and minimise losses linked to macrobends and microbends. Therefore, operators will have access to faster and more stable optical networks, cost-effective and environmentally-friendly installations with lower operating costs and increased network lifespan. Bend resistance can extend the expected network lifetime by improving repair resilience and as such, is beneficial for operators looking to make significant OPEX savings.

“The rising wavelength requirements of PONs and wireless networks drives the need for truly bend-insensitive optical fibres, to become an integral part of Fibre-to the-X (FTTx) and 5G mobile networks,” said Prysmian Group Executive Vice President Telecom Business Philippe Vanhille. “In the new era of hyper connectivity, it is essential that we increase the capacity of the world’s optical networks and operators must choose to leverage a bend-intensive fibre cabling system that can keep up with new technologies. Operators that take advantage of these fibres, and in particular the G.657.A2, will achieve the most potential from their deployed networks.”

Adopting cost-effective and flexible bend-intensive single mode fibres can secure the entire wavelength spectrum used by current and future Passive Optical Networks (PONs). With bend-insensitive fibres, the integrity of the network infrastructure is secured, stability is increased across all bands and possibilities are opened up for system evolution. The resilience of bend-insensitive fibres provides manufacturers with the ability to design cabling solutions that can support the full use of transmission bands and future-proof higher capacity networks, that will often operate outside of present standard ranges.

Moreover, the use of G.657 fibres that are coated with 200 μm and 180 μm diameter can significantly reduce the dimensions of the cables, while achieving higher fibre density. These reduced diameter fibres are fully compatible with any G.652 fibre, which makes them easy to insert into an existing network or upgrade parts of existing optical infrastructure. As fibre networks become more crowded, and space limited, fibre bends are more likely to occur and therefore preventing power leakage with G.657 fibres is crucial. Bend resistance also allows the use of smaller loop guides when installed and a reduction in the bend radius of splice trays.

ST Engineering iDirect and USSI Global close C-band Clearing – Programmer Uplink Compression Integration Deal

Future-proof broadcast equipment will ensure a smooth transition for satellite programmers involved in the compression of signals for C-band clearing

Herndon, VA. and Melbourne, FL. September 28, 2021 – ST Engineering iDirect’s broadcast technology has been selected by USSI Global, a leading provider of customized network, broadcast and digital signage systems and services worldwide, to enable the modernization and compression of satellite programmers’ distribution uplinks to comply with the Federal Communications Commission’s (FCC) C-band spectrum transition.

ST Engineering logo

ST Engineering logo

The upgrade work is part of the FCC’s initiative to clear 300MHz of the C-band’s 500MHz bandwidth frequency for 5G mobile services and relocate service providers within that spectrum to the remaining 200MHz. As the C-band spectrum is mostly used for TV and radio operations, many providers will vacate the 300MHz targeted for 5G services. These transitions will require affected providers to navigate complex technical changes including installation of new and existing antennas and the repointing and filtering required for the antenna upgrades.

ST Engineering iDirect is a key technology partner in the upgrade and will be providing broadcast equipment including M6100 modulators, USS0212 redundancy switches and FR0730 up and down converters, enabling USSI Global to ensure a smooth transition and high-efficiency, future-proof infrastructure. The modernized compression systems will serve extensive sports distribution encompassing MLB, NHL and NBA teams, as well as several major programmer distribution systems in the USA. The upgrade is expected to be completed by August 2023.

“This is a critical and highly visible project that represents an important first element in the FCC initiative to clear the C-band spectrum for 5G. The ground solutions track is part of our core business focus, both now and in the future for our company,” said Bob Dunbar, SVP of Business Development at USSI Global. “We have worked with ST Engineering iDirect for a number of decades and they are a trusted technology partner. We have used its equipment as the solution in most all of our customer uplink modernizations around the globe with several compression vendors. Through its highly innovative and efficient technology and our strong, proven partnership, we know that we can enable the smooth transition for the programmers affected by the C-band clearing compression requirement. We also look forward to seeing our partnership continue to flourish in the future as we jointly leverage emerging opportunities in satellite ground segment.”

“Sports broadcasting is integral to the media sector in the United States, and the transition from the C-band is a critical one,” said Darren Ludington, Regional Vice President of Sales, Americas at ST Engineering iDirect. “We are delighted to support our partner, USSI Global, in what is an important venture for the company. Through this deal, they have truly demonstrated the continued trust they have in our broadcast technology. We look forward to further building on our solid relationship in the future.”

Broadband boost for small and medium MDUs across Europe and North America as InCoax unveils its D2501

Operators will be able to extend XGS-PON or Active Ethernet fiber and manage services through existing customer provisioning systems thanks to the use of established industry standards and protocols

Lund, Sweden, 21 September 2021: Following the release of InCoax D2501, which was unveiled at this year’s Broadband Forum’s UFBB Virtual Conference, Multi-Gigabit and Gigabit symmetrical broadband services in small and mid-sized Multi-Dwelling Units (MDUs) are now possible. Operators and service providers across Europe and North America will more easily be able to extend fiber GPON, XG-PON, XGS-PON and Active Ethernet services with minimal construction work, over the existing in-building coaxial infrastructure.

InCoax D2501

InCoax D2501

InCoax’s fiber access extension technology solves the ‘Last Mile Challenge’ of providing Gigabit or Multi-Gigabit broadband services to MDUs. It cost-effectively uses the existing in-house coax cable infrastructure, positioning it as the time-saving alternative to pulling new cables, as well as helping to meet sustainability targets. This subsequently increases property reach and grows the addressable market size for operators.

The modems can be self-installed by tenants, saving time and money when installing and launching services. It can also be rolled-out in stages which shortens time for revenue, lowers initial CAPEX and contributes to faster overall Return on investment (ROI) for operators. The system offers symmetrical broadband services with low latency, and a fiber-like experience that outperforms any legacy technology such as G.fast to match the increasing market demand for seamless streaming, gaming and working from home.

“InCoax continues to facilitate Multi-Gigabit and Gigabit broadband speeds for subscribers and our technology ensures that operators can undertake fast and non-intrusive installations,” InCoax Head of Marketing, Sales and Product Management Helge Tiainen said. “The latest release of D2501 is the perfect complement to operators’ FTTH strategies
to meet fiber roll-out targets across Europe and North America.”

InCoax D2501 DPU (Distribution Point Unit) extends the northbound backbone GPON, XG-PON, XGS-PON or Active Ethernet fiber network. D2501 is a Broadband Forum TR-301/TR-419 based DPU for 8, 16 or 31 modems making it the versatile choice for small and mid-sized MDU deployments. The broadband connection point (antenna outlet) is located at the heart of the apartment (unit) for easy Smart TV and IP-TV services access, rendering additional internal wiring unnecessary.

The water-resistant IP-67 casing allows for indoor or outdoor installation in any FTTep (Fiber To The extension point) location. The common Reverse Power Feed option is available when local power is not present at the mounting location. Zero Touch Provisioning of system set-up allows for fast and easy installation of systems and effective use of human resources that saves time and money. It is managed through TR-069, NETCONF/YANG and SNMP protocols for incorporation to operators’ existing management and provisioning systems, making it the perfect complement to fiber roll-out strategies in North America and Europe.

The reliable and ingress safe InCoax technology, communicates using the well-established MoCA standard present in millions of applications worldwide. It can co-exist with DOCSIS, Terrestrial-, Cable- and Satellite-TV, enabling flexible deployments that lower market entry thresholds.

Environmentally-friendly fibre migration will see Europe’s sustainability goals met, say Iskratel

Presentation at the FTTH Virtual Conference will highlight the importance of operators focusing on the environmental impact of fibre-based access technologies

Kranj, 14 September 2021 – As more European governments look to achieve their ambitious national sustainability goals, operators and regulators must look into the environmental impact of fibre-based access technologies and the adverse effects that wrong Fibre-To-The-Home (FTTH) choices may have on the environment. This is the message that will be expressed at the FTTH Virtual Conference this week by Iskratel.

While European countries such as Germany may be aware of the carbon intensity of copper-based broadband access, Iskratel Chief Strategy Officer Janez Ori will explain why their business models and technologies must also change in his participation at the "Zoom on German FTTH market" panel at the annual conference. Operators and regulators should not only contemplate the return on investment or the total cost of ownership considerations, but also the levels of power consumption and CO2 emissions directly impacting the environment.

“Operators have an obligation when migrating their business strategies from copper to fibre-based access technologies to make sure they have considered the environmental impact of their operations,” Ori said. “It is very important to focus on the amount of power consumption and CO2 emissions in the atmosphere. Therefore, the industry must not only focus on adopting the most cost-effective and efficient technologies, but also those that are the most environmentally-friendly.”

While maintaining a focus on sustainability, Ori will be comparing not only copper-based and fibre-based access technologies, but also various fibre-based technologies. This will deliver insights highlighting GPON and XGS-PON FTTH as markedly more environmentally-friendly than the likes of HFC, VDSL2 and even P2P FTTH technology in terms of data rates, power consumption and subsequent emissions of CO2 emitted into the atmosphere. Specifically, Iskratel will emphasise the significant amount of CO2 being generated each year in Germany, and the magnitude of the environmental damage being done to the planet with the wrong choice of access technology.

The presentation will focus on the shift from copper to FTTH in Germany, and follows the recent news that Iskratel is expanding into the country’s broadband market to connect underserved regions. Iskratel is also taking a systematic approach to ensuring its fibre-access products achieve a longer network lifespan, decreased energy consumption and reduced waste generation.

Register now to watch Janez Ori on day two of the FTTH Virtual Conference, taking place on September 16.

Our customers see as much as four times the increase in capacity over the previous generation. Rajant provides unique value by maintaining backward compatibility with previous generation BreadCrumbs deployed in the field. This allows sites to upgrade between models knowing that there will be no loss to communications”, shares Chris Acton, General Manager for Acubis Technologies. “We also have many customers in Australia who have invested in LTE solutions but are experiencing coverage and data upload issues. These customers are very anxious to deploy the latest LTE-equipped Peregrines. And being able to now track BreadCrumbs as well as personnel above and below ground provides critical new benefits for our customers.’’

Deployed in more than 230 of the largest open-pit and underground mines globally, Rajant pioneered fully mobile V2X/M2M and has a heritage of maintaining interoperability with existing BreadCrumb wireless nodes with new product releases. Along with the product announcement at MINExpo, live video/voice demonstrations and partner interviews will run daily. They will include Rajant, Boston Dynamics, NEVIL, Overwatch Aero, Vorbeck, and xCraft. Email meeting interest to MINExpo@rajant.com.

Machine Learning technology helps validate job completion as Telent continues in its mission for improved productivity

Warwick, U.K., 13th September 2021 – Telent has successfully enhanced its innovative SOLO application, with Machine Learning (ML) technology, enabling it to build ultra-fast broadband infrastructure projects at scale and with predictable quality by providing digital information and photo evidence of completed work packages. The SOLO technology uses images captured via smart phones to validate job completion. The work is inspected and verified via the images with the support of ML technology, which are then stored for future reference.

This software will ensure Telent can increase visibility of building sites, infrastructure, and planning processes for works to be completed to the highest quality possible. Furthermore, SOLO can display predictive working indicators for added visibility and real-time management. The data flow is capable of scanning an image across multiple workstreams within a few seconds, increasing efficiency, throughput and time-effectiveness.

Ric Welsby, Managing Director, Telent Infrastructure Services said: “This is a very exciting time for Infrastructure Services, and this demonstrates how we are adapting technology to enable us to build fibre networks at scale with consistent, predictable high quality. As we continue to trial innovative new products and utilise such impressive resources, we expect to see an increase in our quality service and productivity across our business in the forthcoming months.”

Telent has branched out through ML, to create a software solution that aims to improve the SOLO service experience through a cost-effective form of Artificial Intelligence (AI). Following a successful proof of concept using ML, the new functionality is now in full production use and includes enhancements that enable predictive maintenance, complex image scanning and consistent updates based on programming automation for future reference.

The ML and AI type solutions utilised by Telent propel the SOLO application to new heights beyond simple database, forms and reporting. This presents substantial potential for further application use going forward, allowing Telent to continuously improve real-time quality, visibility and productivity of service, as well as safety of its workers.

Senior Business Systems Analyst Hari Yenumula, responsible for SOLO’s photo validation technical requirements reported a predictive accuracy of more than 95%, when the system is run 24/7. SOLO went live earlier this year and has since automatically scanned millions of images without human intervention. Due to these impressive results, the SOLO application has now been fully deployed at Telent and is set to handle higher volumes in the future.

Rajant and NEVIL announce strategic partnership around teleoperation for dozing and heavy equipment

Rajant Kinetic Mesh Wireless Optimizing IIoT Safety and Efficiency with Remote Control

Malvern, PA – September 10, 2021: Rajant Corporation, the provider of Kinetic Mesh® wireless networks, and NEVIL ELETRO MECANICA of Brazil are improving safety and efficiency with teleoperation for dozing and heavy equipment. At the upcoming MINExpo in the Las Vegas Convention Center, Rajant and NEVIL will share success stories of deployments in iron ore mines in Brazil and demonstrate the collaborative solution for mining. The strategic partners can be found in North Hall at Booth 1261-N, September 13th to 15th. Email meeting interest to MINExpo@rajant.com.

“Separating people from the risks and adversities inherent to mine site work areas is paramount,” says NEVIL’s CEO Fabio Neves. “Rajant enables reliable and redundant connectivity to NEVIL’s teleoperation software and controls, making possible one operator to control multiple dozers, excavators, loaders, and trucks simultaneously. Mining personnel are conducting heavy equipment operations from remote operation areas with consistency, efficiency, productivity, and safety.”

“Scalability is a shared capability between Rajant and NEVIL,” adds Rajant VP of Sales, Americas, Sagar Chandra. “As location landscape, environment, and conditions change, Rajant and NEVIL dynamically adapt to flex with customer’s mission-critical teleoperations, autonomy, and mobility demands. As Rajant’s unique Kinetic Mesh BreadCrumbs® with InstaMesh® scale and expand, connectivity strengthens across the mine site. Communication of voice, video, and data is delivered with high bandwidth, low latency, and security. One such success story was done by Rajant distributor SiTech Brazil and the simultaneous teleoperation of seventeen heavy construction units.”

Deployed in more than 230 of the largest open-pit and underground mines globally, Rajant pioneered fully mobile V2X/M2M and has a heritage of maintaining interoperability with existing BreadCrumb wireless nodes with new product releases. Working with NEVIL is just one interoperability partnership on display at MINExpo. Live video/voice demonstrations and partner interviews will run daily. They will include Rajant, Boston Dynamics, NEVIL, Overwatch Aero, Vorbeck, and xCraft.

About NEVIL ELETRO MECANICA
NEVIL is based in Brazil. Its goal is to reduce the number of people involved in high-risk operations. With the Nevil LIFEcom remote operation system, customers are able to carry out operations remotely without the involvement of operators in hazardous areas to save lives. The Nevil LIFEcom remote cab is applicable to any machine or truck from any manufacturer, allowing the removal of operators from classified areas in the steel industry, demolitions, and dismantling of dams with risk factors of temperature, dust, noise, gases, and landslides. Currently, some operations have more than 20 pieces of equipment on the same site being operated remotely, carrying out the work efficiently with some local operations and others with operators more than 20 km away from the teleoperated equipment – an important step towards optimizing resources, safety, and productivity, as there are no more losses with displacement, changing rooms, and long stops due to weather warnings.
